Breastfeeding is fundamental for the development and protection of the newborn, and microorganisms present in breast milk are associated with the development of the infant's intestinal microbiota. However, there are factors that interfere with breastfeeding, resulting in the need to supply donated milk to milk banks for these children. Even though there is a restriction on medications prescribed for pregnant and breastfeeding women, some antimicrobials are accepted, as long as they are used correctly and as they can increase the selection pressure for resistant bacteria.

Mediterranean diet adherence has been decreasing during the last few decades, and non-appropriate snacking habits have also been identified among Mediterranean children and adolescents. To co-create new snacks and to explore children's interests and preferences, a multi-method approach was used in the present study, including some qualitative and quantitative research phases. Conducted in collaboration with schools in Lebanon, Egypt, Portugal, Italy, and Spain, different snack prototypes were designed and tested in a Mediterranean cross-cultural context.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed tattoo skin disease (TSD) in 1,392 free-ranging and deceased cetaceans (whales and dolphins) across 17 species from various regions, including the Americas and Europe.
  • The prevalence of TSD was found to vary with age, with juveniles displaying higher infection rates, particularly in samples from Peru; however, sex had little overall impact on TSD rates.
  • Observations suggested that the presence of large tattoos in some adults may indicate compromised immune responses, and the patterns of TSD could serve as a marker for the overall health of cetacean populations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the prevalence and impact of tattoo disease in a population of bottlenose dolphins from the Sado estuary in Portugal, analyzing photographic records from 1994 to 1997.
  • Results indicated that tattoo-like lesions were more common in immature dolphins, with T++ lesions found in 21.9% of dolphins during 1994-1995 and 15.6% in 1996-1997.
  • The findings suggest that tattoo disease is endemic among these dolphins, showing significant temporal variation and possibly linked to environmental contamination in their habitat.
