Diabetes mellitus (DM) and arterial hypertension are considered serious public health problems. Several studies have shown that oxidative stress is usually related to the onset of DM and hypertension, as well their associated complications. Moreover, the levels of some minerals are closely related to the pathophysiology of these diseases.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of low-dose multidetector computed tomographic (LD-MDCT) imaging for the volumetric measurement of simulated periapical lesions.
Methods: Eighteen monoradicular teeth were introduced in bone blocks, and periapical lesions were simulated at the periapical region of each tooth. All teeth were imaged using 4 acquisition protocols: large (dentoalveolar) field of view (FOV) cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging (120 kV, 5 mA, and 0.
Aims: To evaluate the effects of a high-fat diet (HFD) on the progression of apical periodontitis (AP), local inflammation, systemic antioxidant status, and blood lipid profile in rats.
Main Methods: Sixteen male Wistar rats were fed a standard diet (SD) or a HFD. At the sixth experimental week, the pulp chambers of the mandibular first molars were exposed to develop AP.
Objectives: Endodontic infection can cause systemic alterations. The involvement of oxidative stress (OS) and transmembrane enzymes compose the pathogenesis of various systemic diseases. However, the relation among apical periodontitis (AP), OS parameters, and Na/K-ATPase (NKA) pump was not reported in the literature.

This study evaluated the biocompatibility of degradable polydioxanone (PDS) electrospun drug delivery systems (hereafter referred as matrices) containing metronidazole (MET) or ciprofloxacin (CIP) after subcutaneous implantation in rats. Sixty adult male rats were randomized into six groups: SHAM (sham surgery); PDS (antibiotic-free matrix); 1MET (one 25 wt% MET matrix); 1CIP (one 25 wt% CIP matrix); 2MET (two 25 wt% MET matrices); and 2CIP (two 25 wt% CIP matrices). At 3 and 30 days, animals were assessed for inflammatory cell response (ICR), collagen fibers degradation, and oxidative profile (reactive oxygen species [ROS]; lipid peroxidation [LP]; and protein carbonyl [PC]).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmphetamine (AMPH) abuse is a serious public health problem due to the high addictive potential of this drug, whose use is related to severe brain neurotoxicity and memory impairments. So far, therapies for psychostimulant addiction have had limited efficacy. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) have shown beneficial influences on the prevention and treatment of several diseases that affect the central nervous system.

Drug abuse and addiction are overwhelming health problems mainly during adolescence. Based on a previous study of our research group, the rats that received modafinil (MD) during the adolescence showed less preference for amphetamine (AMPH) in adulthood. Our current hypothesis is that MD will show beneficial effects against AMPH preference and abstinence symptoms during adolescence, a critical lifetime period when drug hedonic effects are more pronounced.

Although phenytoin is an antiepileptic drug used in the oral treatment of epilepsy, its off-label use as a cutaneous healing agent has been studied in recent years due to the frequent reports of gingival hyperplasia after oral administration. However, the cutaneous topical application of phenytoin should prevent percutaneous skin permeation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro skin permeation/retention and in vivo effects of nanocapsules and nanoemulsions loaded with phenytoin and formulated as chitosan hydrogels on the healing process of cutaneous wounds in rats.

In the current experiment, an ultra-high dilution (10mg/mL) of AMPH was used, consisting of the AMPH isotherapic (AMPH-ISO), which can be used as a replacement therapy to treat AMPH addiction.
Aim: To verify the influence of AMPH-ISO on toxicological aspects of AMPH addiction.
A balanced intake of fatty acids (FA) of both omega-6 (n-6) and -3 (n-3) series is essential for memory. The Mediterranean diet (MD), rich in n-3 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and low n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio, has shown beneficial influences on health. Inversely, the Western diet contains saturated fats, including hydrogenated vegetable fat (HVF, rich in trans fat) and interesterified fat (IF), making the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio high.

Experimental animal studies have shown that early life periods are highly vulnerable to environmental factors, which may exert prolonged impact on HPA axis function and on subsequent neurochemical and behavioral responses in adulthood. Here we evaluated the influence of environmental stressful situations in two different early life stages on stress-related behaviors, and morphine-conditioned place preference (CPP), which is indicative of addiction. While in the gestational stress (Gest-S) dams were exposed to daily sessions of chronic mild stress (CMS) for 2 weeks, in the postnatal stress (post-NS) the offspring were exposed daily to neonatal isolation from postnatal day (PND) 2 to PND 9 for 60 min.
