We conducted a systematic review of randomized clinical trials evaluating the effects of aerobic, resistance and/or combined training on flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and/or pulse wave velocity (PWV) in older adults. The studies were selected from the electronic databases PubMed, Cochrane, LILACS, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the gray literature. We assessed the studies using Cochrane risk of bias (RoB2) tool and the GRADE tool.

This study aimed to characterize strains isolated from hospitalized patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was achieved using phenotypic and molecular techniques, including their antimicrobial resistance profile and biofilm formation. Eighteen strains were isolated from a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and identified by VITEK2, MALDI-TOF/MS (VITEK MS and MALDI Biotyper), and 16S rRNA sequencing.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the rate of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs; the sum of death, myocardial infarction, and revascularization rates) according to interventional strategies guided by invasive physiological methods in both sexes in a Brazilian population during long-term follow-up for an average of 2 years.

Methods: This retrospective single-center study included 151 consecutive patients (232 lesions) between January 2018 and January 2022. The participants were divided into two groups: the female group (FG), comprising 59 patients with 88 lesions, and the male group (MG), comprising 92 patients with 144 lesions.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) cytotoxicity has been assessed using different methodologies, which has led to arbitrary interpretations. This scoping review aimed to discuss the different methodological protocols for assessing NaOCl cytotoxicity. A literature review performed in the PubMed and Embase databases up to July 2023 identified manuscripts reporting NaOCl cytotoxicity.

The objective of this systematic review was to examine the effects of exercise training on endothelial function in individuals with overweight and obesity. Our review study included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving adults (≥ 18 years of age) with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25.0 kg/m.

Bacteriophages are ubiquitous organisms that can be specific to one or multiple strains of hosts, in addition to being the most abundant entities on the planet. It is estimated that they exceed ten times the total number of bacteria. They are classified as temperate, which means that phages can integrate their genome into the host genome, originating a prophage that replicates with the host cell and may confer immunity against infection by the same type of phage; and lytics, those with greater biotechnological interest and are viruses that lyse the host cell at the end of its reproductive cycle.

Introduction: Aging is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events. It promotes vascular dysfunction which is associated with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Exercise can modulate vascular function parameters, but little is known about the effects of different modalities of training (aerobic, resistance, and combined) on endothelial function and arterial stiffness in older adults.

Purpose: To improve outcomes for subretinal implantation surgery in pigs.

Methods: Analysis of variables affecting the success of subretinal implantation surgery was performed on videos of 37 surgeries. Ex vivo experiments were conducted to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) and test various prototyped implanters for effectiveness at maintaining IOP.

Bacteriophages are bacterial-specific viruses and the most abundant biological form on Earth. Each bacterial species possesses one or multiple bacteriophages and the specificity of infection makes them a promising alternative for bacterial control and environmental safety, as a biotechnological tool against pathogenic bacteria, including those resistant to antibiotics. This application can be either directly into foods and food-related environments as biocontrol agents of biofilm formation.

We report the use of bacteriophages for control of Enteritidis in poultry production. Phage was isolated by the double-agar plate assay from agricultural waste samples, and one isolate, named SM1, was selected and propagated for application in poultry litter. Two experimental protocols were tested: single treatment and repeated treatment (re-application of phage SM1 after 6 h and 12 h).

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPN) are rare and represent a minority of all pancreatic cystic tumors. Symptoms, if present, are generally nonspecific and upper gastrointestinal bleeding is extremely uncommon as an initial presentation. A 31-year-old woman with no prior medical history presented with a 3-week period of epigastric pain, which she reported as persistent, exacerbated by eating, and associated with progressive asthenia, fatigue, and exertional dyspnea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how co-infections with other pathogens affect dogs infected with Leishmania infantum, the cause of canine leishmaniosis.
  • Out of 66 dogs seropositive for L. infantum, 76% were also co-seropositive for other pathogens, particularly Toxoplasma gondii and Ehrlichia spp.
  • Although clinical signs were present in a majority of co-seropositive dogs, the overall disease severity and L. infantum load remained similar between monoinfected and co-infected dogs, although inflammatory responses were increased in co-seropositive cases.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important enteric agent that can circulate in swine; it is excreted in manure, and of zoonotic interest. The present study investigated, by RT-qPCR, the circulation of HEV in swine manure from different types of pig farms (maternity, nursery, and grow-finish farms) in Santa Catarina State, the major pig production area of Brazil, and also evaluated the HEV removal efficiency of psychrophilic anaerobic biodigesters (PABs). While HEV was consistently detected in manure from grow-finish pig farms (>4 log HEV genome copies (GC) L), the virus was not detected in manure from maternity and nursery farms.

We report five cases of Q fever among cadets during a training program for Military Firefighters Academy in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This cluster confirms the significance of as an infectious agent in Brazil, where the occurrence of this zoonosis is poorly documented and highlights the potential risk for Q fever transmission in rural areas or farms with infected animals.

CB1 receptor antagonists have been shown to prevent acute and long-term behavioral effects of cocaine. Here we evaluate the effectiveness of the CB1 receptor antagonist rimonabant to modify sensitized responses to cocaine. Mice were treated with saline or cocaine injections in a 15-day intermittent sensitization treatment and subsequently treated with either vehicle, 1 or 10mg/kg rimonabant in the drug-associated environment for 8 consecutive days.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of bilateral or left sympathectomy on left ventricular remodeling and function after myocardial infarction in rats.

Methods: Myocardial infarction was induced in rats by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary. Seven days later, rats were divided into 4 groups: the myocardial infarction, myocardial infarction with left sympathectomy, myocardial infarction with bilateral sympathectomy, and sham groups.

Background: When intestinal microbiota is imbalanced, a patient becomes more vulnerable to infectious complications; intervention with beneficial probiotics may help lower risk for infection. The aim of this study was to measure levels of inflammatory cytokine messenger RNA (mRNA) in surgical samples of intestinal mucosal tissues from patients who were given the probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii before undergoing colon surgery.

Methods: Thirty-three patients undergoing colon resection were randomly assigned to receive at least 7-day preoperative probiotic treatment (n = 15) or conventional (n = 18) treatment.

With the aim of evaluating the cardiac autonomic function in elderly chagasic patients living in an endemic area, we evaluated, by using computadorized heart rate variability, 28 elderly chagasic with the indeterminate form, 28 elderly non chagasic and 28 young healthy control. In all patients we performed conventional electrocardiogram, radiological investigation of thorax, and with contrast of esophagus and colons and echodopplercardiogram. Non chagasic patients did not perform only the exams with contrast.
