Serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity is frequently increased in patients with active sarcoidosis. In spite of a reported association between sarcoidosis and psoriasis, serum angiotensin converting enzyme activities have not been reported for patients with psoriasis. We found the mean (SD) angiotensin-converting enzyme activity for 51 healthy subjects was 18.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA discordant hepatic uptake between Tc-99m sulfur colloid and Ga-67 citrate has occurred in an adult patient with hepatotoxicity due to hypervitaminosis A. The authors believe this is a scintigraphic phenomenon related to the characteristics of the radiopharmaceuticals used and does not necessarily represent a true dissociation of various cellular functions of the liver.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAfter the lower esophageal sphincters of large mongrel dogs had been made surgically incompetent, the degree of sphincter incompetency was determined by the grade of esophagitis present and the reflux volume. Five dogs were endoscopically injected in the distal esophagus with 5 to 30 ml of Teflon paste during four to six injection sessions, and all five dogs developed transient increases in the reflux volumes. Each of the five dogs sloughed a portion of injected Teflon during the 4-month study.

Fifteen dogs had two-dimensional echocardiograms recorded during either open chest coronary occlusion (n = 5), closed chest occlusion (n = 5), occlusion followed by reperfusion (n = 3) or sham coronary occlusion (n = 2). A serial increase in integrated backscatter ratio, representing differences in returned ultrasound intensities between a reference point and specific myocardial regions, was detected between 7 and 12 minutes of complete occlusion in 9 of 12 animals (p less than 0.

Four lots of mumps antigen selected on the basis of in vitro potency tests were used. Four other antigens, Histoplasmin, Dermatophytin-O, Dermatophytin, and fluid tetanus toxoid were also tested; positive reactions for these four antigens occurred in 48, 68, 25, and 43% of individuals, respectively.

The two best criteria for BD are cellular uniformity and absence of pilosebaceous involvement. Vesicular chromatin is a less constant feature of BD.

The sensitivity and specificity of bone scans were 83% and 75%, respectively, for osteomyelitis of the small bones of the foot. The positive and negative predictive values were 87% and 69%, respectively.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThirty correctly diagnosed carcinomas were chosen for retrospective analysis of their ultrasound and X-ray imaging characteristics, and correlated with pathologic examination. It was determined that the ultrasound image correlated will with that revealed by radiographic techniques. The posterior attenuation shadow and the jagged wall were the prime indicators of malignancy in this study, occurring in 90 and 87% of the cases, respectively.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA glycogen-rich clear cell carcinoma arose in the breast of a 49-year-old woman. Light microscopic examination of the neoplasm revealed both intraductal papillary growth and stromal invasion. Electron microscopic examination demonstrated neoplastic cells that contained massive quantities of nonmembrane-bound particulate glycogen and that formed numerous acini.

Our findings differ from those of the only other cytologic report of such a lesion. We review the literature and summarize the clinical and pathologic findings of endobronchial granular cell tumors.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA 71-year-old man had status epilepticus and was treated with phenytoin (Dilantin) sodium. Subsequently, an absolute eosinophilia developed, which increased and reached its zenith immediately before the patient died. At autopsy, anasarca and an interstitial nephritis characterized predominantly by eosinophils and occasional focal necrotizing arteriolar glomerular lesions were found.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFEndodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac carcinoma), a germinal neoplasm, is rarely primary in the cranial cavity. The authors add a third case with the tumor located in the anterior third ventricular (suprasellar) region to the literature. Seventeen previously reported intracranial cases, mostly in the pineal region, are briefly reviewed.
