Incidence, risk factors, and consequences of radiographic pin migration after pinning of pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures.

Current literature on pin migration is inconsistent and its significance is not understood. We aimed to investigate the incidence, magnitude, predictors, and consequences of radiographic pin migration after pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures (SCHF). We retrospectively reviewed pediatric patients treated with reduction and pinning of SCHF at our institution.

Evaluation of a Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis Virtual Reality Surgical Simulation for the Orthopaedic Trainee.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between orthopaedic trainees using various preoperative training platforms (physical simulation [PS], virtual reality [VR], and reading/videos) in a slipped capital femoral epiphysis model.

Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: (1) reading/video control group (n = 7), (2) VR group (n = 7), or (3) PS group (n = 7). Participants in the VR group completed a VR slipped capital femoral epiphysis module while participants in the PS group practiced the placement of a screw in the physical module before evaluation of percutaneous screw placement in the PS model.

Development and Validation of SCFE Percutaneous Pinning Surgical Simulation.

Background: In situ screw fixation with a single percutaneously placed femoral screw remains widely accepted for femoral head fixation in adolescent patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Given the potential risks involved with this procedure, a simulation whereby surgical skills could be refined before entering the operating room may be of benefit to orthopaedic trainees.

Methods: We developed a synthetic model for the simulated treatment of SCFE.

Impact of Surgical Waiting-List Times on Scoliosis Surgery: The Surgeon's Perspective.

Study Design: Survey.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the surgeon's perspective on the potential impact of prolonged surgical waitlists on the surgical care and perioperative management of patients with scoliosis.

Summary Of Background Data: The long waits for surgical treatment of scoliosis found in some countries may have serious implications for the complexity of surgery and perioperative care required if the curve progresses while waiting.

Citation classics in pediatric orthopaedics.

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical pediatric orthopaedic articles with at least 100 citations published in all orthopaedic journals and to examine their characteristics.

Methods: All journals dedicated to orthopaedics and its subspecialties were selected from the Journal Citation Report 2001 under the subject category "orthopedics." Articles cited 100 times or more were identified using the database of the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED, 1900 to present).

Publication of abstracts submitted to the annual meeting of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America: is there a difference between accepted versus rejected abstracts?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine publication rates of all abstracts submitted for presentation at the annual conference of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) comparing papers accepted for presentation with those that were not accepted and to determine the median times to publication and the mean impact factor of journals that published papers from the 2 groups.

Methods: The titles and authors of all abstracts submitted for presentation to the POSNA for the years 2003 to 2005 were identified. To determine publication status, we conducted a computerized Pubmed search using the first author's name.

Review of current methods used in the treatment of clubfoot at initial presentation and at recurrence.

Idiopathic clubfoot is a common condition seen by orthopaedic surgeons and is characterized by complex three-dimensional deformity of the foot. It is recognized that clubfoot treatment is a challenging issue in orthopaedics because it is an ongoing process, beginning in early infancy and continuing until the patient has reached skeletal maturity. This review article summarizes two important stages of clubfoot treatment.
