Protective role of vitamin D3 in a rat model of hyperthyroid-induced cardiomyopathy.

Background And Aim: Several studies have reported the cardioprotective effect of vitamin D. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the possible cardioprotective effect of vitamin D3 in hyperthyroid-induced cardiomyopathy rat model.

Experimental Procedure: Rats were divided into 3 groups: control group; hyperthyroid group, rats were administrated l-thyroxine sodium daily for 4 weeks; and hyperthyroid + vitamin D3 treated group, rats were treated with l-thyroxine sodium for 4 weeks daily, and received the vitamin D3 for the same duration.

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated skin disease with a potential morbidity in patients. Cold-inducible RNA binding protein (CIRP) is a stress responsive protein having diverse roles in cancer and inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of CIRP, (serum and tissue), in psoriasis patients and to correlate this expression to the clinico-pathological data of the patients.

Metastatic Collision Tumour (Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma) in Cervical Lymph Nodes: An Immunohistochemical Analysis.

Collision tumours are a rare entity, in this report, we describe a case of 73-year-old woman presented with a rapid enlargement of left upper cervical lymph node (LN) associated with right thyroid nodular goiter. The histopathological examination of the excised LN showed definite areas of papillary thyroid carcinoma admixed with moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Thyroglobulin immunostaining was positive in papillary carcinomatous areas confirming thyroid gland as a source of metastasis.

Primary Epithelioid Angiosarcoma of Spleen: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Splenic angiosarcomas are usually secondary tumours, and only few primary cases have been encountered. We report a unique primary case of epithelioid angiosarcoma arising in the spleen in a male patient 55-year-old and presented to our hospital as a medical emergency with acute abdomen and haemorrhagic ascitis. CT revealed splenic focal lesion and suggested that this abdominal haemorrhage was due to ruptured splenic haemangioma, thus abdominal exploration and splenectomy were done.

Renal cell carcinoma with rhabdoid and sarcomatoid features presented as a metastatic thigh mass with an unusual immunohistochemical profile.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) may metastasize anywhere in the body and sometimes the primary tumor is missing and necessitates extensive investigations to detect. In this report, we describe a case of RCC metastasizing to the thigh in a 70 year old male with a highly pleomorphic morphology suggesting a high grade sarcoma that showed unequivocal positivity for desmin directing the diagnosis for pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. After completion of 33 cycles of radiotherapy, the patient developed large intraabdominal mass that showed conventional areas of RCC with immunoreactivity for CD10, CK, EMA, carbonic anhydrase IX and vimentin.

Cervical and Oral Screening for HR-HPV types 16 and 18 among Sudanese Women Cervical Lesions.

Objective: This study examined whether there is a positive correlation existed between cervical and oral High Risk-Human Papilloma Viruses (HR-HPV) types 16, 18 infections in patients with clinically confirmed cervical lesions.

Methods: In this study 50 participants were included (40 were cases and 10 were controls). One hundred DNA materials (50 were cervical and 50 were oral epithelial tissues) were analyzed using HR-HPV subtypes 16 and 18 specific PCR probes.

A time-motion economic analysis of postoperative nausea and vomiting in ambulatory surgery.

Background: One-third of surgical outpatients experience postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) during their hospital stay or post-discharge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) after hospitalization. We determined the incremental costs of PONV/PDNV in ambulatory patients with this time-and-motion study.

Methods: In 100 ambulatory surgery patients, we evaluated the incidence of PONV, time staff spent with patients, use of PONV-related supplies, recovery duration, PONV rescue treatments, and quality-of-life through to the third postoperative morning.

A randomized comparison between the Pentax AWS video laryngoscope and the Macintosh laryngoscope in morbidly obese patients.

Background: The Pentax AWS is a novel video laryngoscope designed to facilitate tracheal intubation by providing indirect visualization of the laryngeal inlet. We sought to compare the intubation success rate and time to intubation for the Pentax AWS and the classic Macintosh laryngoscope. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that intubation with the Pentax AWS would be easier and faster than with a standard Macintosh #4 blade in obese patients.
