The appropriateness of the fecal microbiota to adequately reflect the gut microbiota composition from more difficult to access luminal content at different colonic locations has been debated. Here, in a healthy population, luminal samples were collected from terminal ileum to rectum using an unique sampling technique without the need of prior bowel cleansing/preparation. Rectal swabs were collected immediately prior colonoscopy by an experienced physician, and fecal samples were collected at home by the participants themselves.

The cell matrix of plant foods has received little attention in prebiotic fiber research. We aimed to understand the impact of the plant cell matrix in dried chicory root on its breakdown in the human gut to explain its reported beneficial effects on gut and metabolic health. We applied digestion and fermentation models together with an gut barrier integrity model.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of Fontan circulation on cardiac and liver health, focusing on increased systemic venous pressure leading to specific disease conditions.
  • Thirty-eight Fontan patients and 23 control subjects underwent advanced MRI to assess cardiac and liver fibrosis and cardiac remodeling, revealing significant differences in various measured parameters between the two groups.
  • Results indicate a strong correlation between cardiac and liver health markers, suggesting that MRI could be crucial for monitoring and improving treatment strategies in these patients to potentially avoid the need for dual organ transplants.

The present work is concerned with the use of a Response Surface Model of the reduced flexibility matrix for structural damage identification. A Response Surface Model (RSM) is fitted with the aim at providing a polynomial relationship between nodal cohesion parameters, used to describe the damage field within the structure, and elements of the reduced flexibility matrix. A design of experiment built on combinations of a relatively small number of nodal cohesion parameters is used to fit the RSM.

Background: Nasal septal perforations (NSP) can have a heterogeneous appearance on endoscopic examination with varying degrees of crusting, inflammatory change, and associated septal deviation. The clinical applicability of these findings as contributors to patient symptoms may be enhanced by use of a standardized assessment.

Methods: Video nasal endoscopy recordings were obtained from 40 patients with NSP.

Objectives: The study aimed to assess and compare cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-CXCL13 levels in People with HIV (PWH) with suspected neurosyphilis (NS), those with syphilis but without NS, and patients without treponema infection. Additionally, it aimed to evaluate changes in CSF-CXCL13 concentrations before and after antibiotic treatment.

Design: This was a prospective cohort study involving 93 PWH suspected of NS.

Background And Objectives: Preoperative embolization of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) remains controversial. This study sought to analyze the cost-effectiveness of preoperative embolization of AVMs.

Methods: Patients who underwent AVM resection at a single institute (January 1, 2015-December 31, 2020) were analyzed.

Pressure injuries (PIs) are a spectrum of localized tissue destruction that develops most often at a bony prominence. PIs are the result of a combination of extrinsic (eg, pressure, shear, friction, and moisture) and intrinsic (nutritional status, spasticity, decreased sensation, and vascular disease) factors. Given their complex etiology, management of PIs requires a multidisciplinary approach from a team of health care professionals.

Background: The first instance of a robotic-assisted surgery occurred in neurosurgery; however, it is now more common in other fields such as urology and gynecology. This study aims to characterize the prevalence of robotic surgery among current neurosurgery programs as well as identify trends in clinical trials pertaining to robotic neurosurgery.

Methods: Each institution's website was analyzed for the mention of a robotic neurosurgery program and procedures.

Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) are benign tumors that are believed to arise from embryonic remnants of the Rathke pouch epithelium. Herein, we report a case of aseptic meningitis due to spontaneous rupture of multicystic CP, which contained an Ommaya catheter. A 19-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with a 4-day history of acute severe headache after strenuous physical exercise followed by altered sensorium, fever, and neck stiffness.

Objectives: To provide a better understanding of methods that can be used to improve patient outcomes by reducing the door-to-groin puncture (DTP) time and present the results of a stroke quality improvement project (QIP) conducted by Mayo Clinic Arizona's stroke center.

Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search of Ovid MEDLINE(R), Ovid EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies that evaluated DTP time reduction strategies. Those determined eligible for the purpose of this analysis were assessed for quality.

occurs in the Amazon region, and some species of this genus are used in Brazilian folk medicine. A recent study showed the inhibitory effect of this species against influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, and in order to acquire active fractions, a polar solvent system -butanol-methanol-water (9:1:10, /) was selected and used for bioassay-guided fractionation of -butanol extract by centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC). The upper phase was used as stationary phase and the lower phase as mobile (descending mode).

Background: In patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), cardiogenic shock (CS), and multivessel disease (MVD) questions remain unanswered when it comes to intervention on non-culprit arteries.

Objective: This article aims to 1) characterize patients with MI, CS and MVD included in the Portuguese Registry on Acute Coronary Syndromes (ProACS); 2) compare different revascularization strategies in the sample; 3) identify predictors of in-hospital mortality among these patients.

Methods: Observational retrospective study of patients with MI, CS and MVD included in the ProACS between 2010 and 2018.
