Article Synopsis
  • Hypertension is a key risk factor for atherosclerosis, and increased carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) serves as a noninvasive indicator of overall atherosclerotic disease.
  • The study focused on older adults, examining 60 hypertensive individuals alongside 30 healthy controls, revealing that hypertensive patients had higher levels of body mass index, cholesterol, and inflammatory marker hs-CRP.
  • Findings indicated that higher hs-CRP levels and longer hypertension duration correlated positively with increased carotid IMT, suggesting inflammation plays a more significant role in arterial thickening than other traditional risk factors.

The role of urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and c-erbB-2 in breast and ovarian cancer was investigated. Eighty patients of breast and ovarian cancer and benign lesions, as well as twenty normal controls were evaluated for the expression of c-erbB-2 by Western blotting and uPAR levels by ELISA. The c-erbB-2 and uPAR showed a significant increase in both types of cancer investigated compared to normal control and benign lesions.
