Ferulic acid (FA) and p-coumaric acid (PCA) are abundantly present in commonly consumed food and beverages. Being polyphenolic compounds, they have been explored for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Based on our previous study, we selected these two compounds to further investigate their potential in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sickness behavior and the ensuing neuroinflammation by specifically focusing on the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

Effect of chronic low-dose treatment with chitooligosaccharides on microbial dysbiosis and inflammation associated chronic ulcerative colitis in Balb/c mice.

The study aimed to investigate the potential of low dose chitooligosaccharide (COS) in ameliorating dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) induced chronic colitis by regulating microbial dysbiosis and pro-inflammatory responses. Chronic colitis was induced in BALB/c mice by DSS (4% w/v, 3 cycles of 5 days) administration. The mice were divided into four groups: vehicle, DSS, DSS + mesalamine and DSS+COS.

Introduction: Extreme heat is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, and the incidence of acute heat illness (AHI) will likely increase secondary to anthropogenic climate change. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of AHI are critical; however, relevant diagnostic and surveillance tools have received little attention. In this exploratory cross-sectional and diagnostic accuracy study, we evaluated three tools for use in the prehospital setting: 1) case definitions; 2) portable loggers to measure on-scene heat exposure; and 3) prevalence data for potential AHI risk factors.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can simply be defined as a violent external injury to the head causing brain dysfunction. The primary injury occurs immediately on impact whereas the secondary injury begins minutes to months after impact. TBI affects a vast majority of population worldwide yet, there isn't any therapeutic intervention available.

Neuroprotective effect of Mulmina™ against chemotherapy-induced cognitive decline in normal mice.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate a marketed formulation against chemotherapy-induced cognitive dysfunction. The formulation, Mulmina™, contains natural compounds which are known to help in improving function as well as in preventing cognitive decline. All of the phytoconstituents in the formulation have been tested individually but this is the first study where such a formulation has been evaluated against chemotherapy-induced cognitive decline (CICD) in a mouse model.

Objective: We conducted a systematic review of the available literature on deaths, injuries and permanent disability from rubber and plastic bullets, as well as from bean bag rounds, shot pellets and other projectiles used in arrests, protests and other contexts from 1 January 1990 until 1 June 2017.

Data Sources: PubMed, Scopus, JSTOR and grey literature.

Data Synthesis: We report on descriptive statistics as well as data on injury severity, permanent disability and death.

Background: Chemical irritants used in crowd control, such as tear gases and pepper sprays, are generally considered to be safe and to cause only transient pain and lacrimation. However, there are numerous reports that use and misuse of these chemicals may cause serious injuries. We aimed to review documented injuries from chemical irritants to better understand the morbidity and mortality associated with these weapons.

Limitations of Rapid Diagnostic Testing in Patients with Suspected Malaria: A Diagnostic Accuracy Evaluation from Swaziland, a Low-Endemicity Country Aiming for Malaria Elimination.

Background: The performance of Plasmodium falciparum-specific histidine-rich protein 2-based rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) to evaluate suspected malaria in low-endemicity settings has not been well characterized.

Methods: Using dried blood spot samples from patients with suspected malaria at 37 health facilities from 2012 to 2014 in the low-endemicity country of Swaziland, we investigated the diagnostic accuracy of histidine-rich protein 2-based RDTs using qualitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (nested PCR targeting the cytochrome b gene) and quantitative PCR as reference standards. To explore reasons for false-negative and/or false-positive results, we used pfhrp2/3-specific PCR and logistic regression analyses of potentially associated epidemiological factors.

Spinal intramedullary arachnoid cyst in a 4-year-old girl: a rare cause of treatable acute quadriparesis: case report.

The authors report their experience in successfully treating a 4-year-old girl who presented with sudden onset of quadriparesis that lasted for 20 days. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the spine revealed an intramedullary cystic lesion extending from C-4 to C-6. A C4-6 laminectomy was performed followed by a median myelotomy.

Enlarged thyroid with retrosternal extension presenting as anterior mediastinal mass is known. Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome due to direct invasion from a primary thyroid malignancy is a rare phenomenon. We present a unique case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid extending into the posterior mediastinum with superior vena cava syndrome along with internal jugular and azygous vein thrombosis.

Hepatocellular failure in glycogen storage disorder type 3.

A case of a 21 years male patient with type 3 glycogen storage disorder diagnosed at necropsy, who died suddenly with hypovolemic shock following a massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to hepatocellular failure is reported. Salient features of GSD type 3 are briefly discussed.
