Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the characteristics and viral associations of primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) in Taiwan, focusing on its relationship with HIV, HHV8, and EBV.
  • In 26 cases analyzed, the majority were not infected with HIV, and although a variety of genetic markers were tested, significant factors affecting overall survival were linked to MYC expression and BCL2 rearrangement.
  • The findings suggest a distinction between HHV8-positive and -negative cases, proposing that HHV8-positive PELs could be classified as 'classical/type I PEL' and those negative for HHV8 as 'type II PEL,' noting differences in prognosis and viral associations.

A small proportion of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) may progress to large cell lymphoma, or Richter syndrome (RS). The large cells of RS may arise through transformation of the original CLL clone (clonally related) or represent a new neoplasm (clonally unrelated), which might be Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated. We present a 61-year-old male with 5-year history of CLL who developed RS on bilateral adrenal glands.
