Purpose: To address the issue of RF-induced heating for partially in and partially out (PIPO) medical devices during 1.5 T MRI scans by proposing a method of minimizing the external portion.

Methods: A method of tightly winding the external segment of the PIPO device is proposed to minimize the overall device effective reception length during MRI scans to mitigate the RF-induced heating.

Background: Macrolide maintenance therapy (MMT) has demonstrated notable efficacy in reducing exacerbation in patients with bronchiectasis, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular events. However, a comprehensive assessment of the cardiovascular benefits and safety profile of MMT in this population is lacking.

Methods: This territory-wide cohort study analyzed patients diagnosed with bronchiectasis in Hong Kong between 2001 and 2018.

Privacy and security concerns restrict access to original training datasets, posing significant challenges for model compression. Data-Free Knowledge Distillation (DFKD) emerges as a solution, aiming to transfer knowledge from teacher to student networks without accessing original data. Existing DFKD methods struggle to generate high-quality synthetic samples that capture the complexities of real-world data, leading to suboptimal knowledge transfer.

Macroporous resin is an efficient separation technology that plays a crucial role in the separation and purification of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, the application of macroporous resins in TCM pharmaceuticals is hindered by serious fouling caused by the complex materials used in TCM. This study examines the impact of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane technology on the macroporous resin adsorption behavior of TCM extracts.

Background: Microvascular invasion (MVI) is an independent risk factor of poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and can be used to guide the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. The immune system serves as an integral role in the incidence and progression of HCC. However, the molecular biology correlation between MVI and tumor immunity and the value of combining the two parameters to predict patient prognosis and HCC response to treatment remain to be evaluated.

Background: Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) intimately correlates with right ventricular afterload and the development of secondary tricuspid regurgitation (sTR).

Objectives: We sought to investigate the prognostic roles of PVR derived by echocardiography in patients with sTR undergoing tricuspid annuloplasty (TA).

Methods: Data from 322 TA patients [median age (interquartile range): 65.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (ULBD) in treating patients with adjacent vertebrae problems after lumbar fusion, analyzing data from 21 patients over a period from January 2021 to November 2023.
  • Results were promising, showing significant improvements in pain and functional scores (like VAS, NRS, and JOA) immediately after surgery and at 12 months, along with a high satisfaction rate of 95% and no reported complications.
  • The findings suggest that ULBD is a safe and effective option for managing symptomatic adjacent segment disease (ASD) in patients following lumbar fusion surgery.

Urban form is a key factor affecting carbon emissions. Accurately estimating the impact of urban form on the carbon emissions of residents (CER) is an important prerequisite for China to adopt effective low-carbon spatial planning strategies and respond to climate change. However, counties mainly account for China's energy consumption, and the relationship between their urban form and the CER remains unclear, limiting their low-carbon development.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates multiple synchronous lung cancers (MSLCs) by analyzing samples from 8 patients using advanced sequencing methods to understand their genetic and immune differences across various stages.
  • - Findings reveal that the tumors are clonally independent with shared driver mutations, but exhibit few common mutations between tumors from the same patient, indicating they developed independently.
  • - The research highlights a shift in T cell profiles from pre-invasive to invasive adenocarcinoma, with an increase in regulatory T cells and exhausted CD8 T cells, as well as greater neoantigen diversity, emphasizing the unique genomic and immune traits of MSLCs.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), characterized by repeated alcohol consumption and withdrawal symptoms, poses a significant public health issue. Alcohol-induced impairment of the intestinal barrier results in alterations in intestinal permeability and the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Such alterations lead to a reduced relative abundance of intestinal lactic acid bacteria.

Background: Liver cancer stem cells (LCSCs) significantly impact chemo-resistance and recurrence in liver cancer. Dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) is known to enhance the cancer stem cell (CSC) phenotype in glioblastoma and correlates with poor prognosis in some non-central nervous system tumors; however, its influence on LCSCs remains uncertain.

Methods: To investigate the gene and protein expression profiles of DRD4 in LCSCs and non-LCSCs, we utilized transcriptome sequencing and Western blotting analysis.

Aims: The association of haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) variability with the risk of adverse outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) prescribed anticoagulants remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association of HbA1c variability with the risk of ischaemic stroke (IS)/systemic embolism (SE) and all-cause mortality among patients with non-valvular AF prescribed anticoagulants.

Methods And Results: Patients newly diagnosed with AF from 2013 to 2018 were included.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the neural mechanism by which virtual chatbots' gender might influence users' usage intention and gender differences in human-machine communication.

Approach: Event-related potentials (ERPs) and subjective questionnaire methods were used to explore the usage intention of virtual chatbots, and statistical analysis was conducted through repeated measures ANOVA.

Results/findings: The findings of ERPs revealed that female virtual chatbots, compared to male virtual chatbots, evoked a larger amplitude of P100 and P200, implying a greater allocation of attentional resources toward female virtual chatbots.

Background: Given the significant impact on human health, it is imperative to develop novel treatment approaches for diabetic wounds, which are prevalent and serious complications of diabetes. The diabetic wound microenvironment has a high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and an imbalance between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cells/factors, which hamper the healing of chronic wounds. This study aimed to develop poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofibrous membranes incorporating curcumin and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), defined as PLLA/C/Ag, for diabetic wound healing.
