This study examined the kinematic characteristics of the Pritchard ERS elbow-resurfacing system, with special attention paid to the effects of the radial head component. The kinematics between the ulna and humerus were assessed in 6 human cadaveric specimens by an electromagnetic tracking system throughout a full flexion/extension range of motion. The elbows were studied under 2 loading conditions, in 3 orientations (neutral, varus, and valgus), and under 4 surgical conditions.

In one squirrel monkey, the lateral canals were plugged bilaterally and the prosthesis was secured to the animal's head with the angular velocity sensor parallel to the axis of the lateral canals. In the first experiment, the stimulating electrode was placed near the ampullary nerve of one lateral canal.

To confirm and extend these results we evaluated 22 phosphine appliers and 26 controls matched for age and smoking status. Two independent methods were used to evaluate exposure: fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with whole-chromosome paints of chromosomes 1, 2, and 4 labeled in a single color to quantify translocations in peripheral lymphocytes, and the glycophorin A (GPA) assay to quantify phenotypically mutant (NØ or NN) erythrocytes.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAn investigation using in situ analysis by portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) has shown that contamination present on industrial buildings at a heritage arsenic works site near Redruth, Cornwall, UK results from the absorption of arsenic by porous and semi-porous building materials that were in contact with arsenic-rich flue gases. Results from a preliminary survey indicate that arsenic remains locked in these materials and is being gradually leached out by weathering processes. This weathering causes general contamination of the adjacent building surfaces averaging 1845 microg g(-1) arsenic, presumably caused by evaporation of leach solutions in contact with air at the surface of the building materials.

Reoxidation reverses this process and oxide island structures and bare metal patches are reestablished. The physical origin of this wetting-dewetting process is revealed at the atomic level by in situ variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and in terms of a surface oxide phase stability diagram, as calculated by density functional theory as a function of the chemical potential of oxygen and the vanadium concentration.

Keratinocytes engineered to express hTERT maintain long telomeres but typically are not immortalized unless, by mutation or other heritable event, they avoid or greatly reduce p16 expression. We have confirmed that keratinocytes undergo p16-related senescence during growth in culture, whether in the fibroblast feeder cell system or in the specialized K-sfm medium formulation, and that this mechanism can act as a barrier to immortalization following hTERT expression.

Similarities among the daf-2 pathway, insulin-like signaling in flies and yeast, and the mammalian insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling cascade raise the possibility that modifications to IGF-1 signaling could also extend lifespan in mammals. In fact, growth hormone (GH)/IGF-1-deficient dwarf mice do live significantly longer than their wild-type counterparts.
