Background: Calcaneal tuberosity avulsion fractures are challenging to treat because of the poor bone stock and high risk of fixation failure secondary to the strong Achilles tendon pull. The purpose of this study is to compare the tensile force to failure of 2 different types of screw fixation construct in a cadaveric model of calcaneal tuberosity avulsion fracture.

Methods: An oblique osteotomy was created in the calcanei of 7 matched pairs of cadaveric specimens to simulate a tuberosity avulsion fracture and one specimen from each pair randomized into one of the 2 groups for comparison.

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders associated with reductions in bone mineral density and increased fracture risk. Fluoxetine is a highly prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) in the treatment of depression and is reported to be a risk factor for fractures. We previously established a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) carrier system that reduces the therapeutic dose of BMP-2 in both rodent and porcine spinal fusion models. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) has been widely used in spine fusion surgery. However, high doses of rhBMP-2 delivered with absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) have led to inflammation-related adverse conditions. Background: In cemented joint arthroplasty, the handling characteristics (doughing, working, and setting times) of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is important as it determines the amount of time surgeons have to optimally position an implant. Storage conditions (temperature and humidity) and the time given for PMMA cement to equilibrate to ambient operating theater (OT) temperatures are often unregulated and may lead to inconsistencies in its handling characteristics. This has not been previously studied.
