Article Synopsis
  • Excess lipid buildup in the heart leads to lipotoxicity and cardiac issues, with PPARγ influencing key fatty acid metabolism pathways.
  • Overexpressing PPARγ in heart cells causes dilated cardiomyopathy in mice, while miR-130b-3p is found to be downregulated in patients, highlighting a potential protective role.
  • The study shows that when miR-130b-3p is increased in human cardiomyoblasts, it reduces the harmful effects of palmitate-induced stress by targeting and downregulating PPARγ, thus alleviating oxidative stress and cell apoptosis.

Purpose: Radiation oncologists use radiation variably for children with metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). Data from the European paediatric Soft tissue sarcoma Study Group (EpSSG) MTS 2008 study were retrospectively analyzed to validate the previous observation that the use of radiation is associated with improved outcomes and guide future recommendations on radiation use in this patient group.

Methods And Materials: The radiation delivered to 216 patients aged 0 to 21 years with metastatic RMS was retrospectively reviewed and classified as radical (all sites of disease irradiated within the protocol parameters), partial (some sites irradiated within the protocol parameters), and none (no radiation or delivered outside the protocol parameters).

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy is an inherited entity characterized by irregular cell-cell adhesion, cardiomyocyte death and fibro-fatty replacement of ventricular myocytes, leading to malignant ventricular arrythmias, contractile dysfunction and sudden cardiac death. Pathogenic variants in genes that encode desmosome are the predominant cause of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. Moreover, signalling pathways such as Wnt/ß-catenin and transforming growth factor-β have been involved in the disease progression.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiation recall reaction (RRR) is a rare inflammatory condition that occurs in areas previously exposed to radiation, and this study focuses on cases triggered by the chemotherapy combination of gemcitabine-docetaxel in pediatric patients.
  • A retrospective analysis of 21 children treated with G/D and prior radiotherapy from 2010 to 2022 revealed that 76.2% experienced RRR, primarily affecting the deeper skin layers after two cycles of treatment.
  • The findings suggest higher rates of RRR than previously documented, particularly with larger radiation volumes and shorter intervals between radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and indicate a risk of recurrence with re-exposure to G/D.

Inherited mutations in the gene have been associated with an increased lifetime risk of developing breast cancer (BC). We aim to identify in the study population the prevalence of mutations in the gene in diagnosed BC patients, evaluate the phenotypic characteristics of the tumor and family history, and predict the deleteriousness of the variants of uncertain significance (VUS). A genetic study was performed, from May 2016 to April 2020, in 396 patients diagnosed with BC at the University Hospital Lozano Blesa of Zaragoza, Spain.

Background: This study was designed to identify common genetic susceptibility and shared genetic variants associated with acute radiation-induced toxicity across 4 cancer types (prostate, head and neck, breast, and lung).

Methods: A genome-wide association study meta-analysis was performed using 19 cohorts totaling 12 042 patients. Acute standardized total average toxicity (STATacute) was modelled using a generalized linear regression model for additive effect of genetic variants, adjusted for demographic and clinical covariates (rSTATacute).

Recognizing symptoms in elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) can be a challenge. Serum biomarkers such as Galectin-3 or N-terminal prohormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are involved in remodeling and heart failure (HF) development and could support the diagnosis of AS. We set out to test the usefulness of NT-proBNP and Galectin-3 in predicting events in this population.

Oxidative stress, defined as the excess production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) relative to antioxidant defense, plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has emerged as an important source of ROS and its modulation could be cardioprotective. Previously, we demonstrated that miR-16-5p is enriched in the plasma of ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (ICM) patients and promotes ER stress-induced apoptosis in cardiomyocytes in vitro.
