Objective: Studies have found that cancer patients with dependent children exhibit high symptoms of anxiety, depression, and worry. Patients' parenting concerns can negatively impact their own and their family's adjustment to the cancer experience. However, relatively little is known about parenting concerns of partners of cancer patients, or associations between parenting concerns and couples' relationship adjustment.

Most forms of clinical research examine a very minute cross section of the patient journey. Much of the knowledge and evidence base driving current genomic medicine practice entails blind spots arising from underrepresentation and lack of research participation in clinicogenomic databases. The flaws are perpetuated in AI models and clinical practice guidelines that reflect the lack of diversity in data being used.

Patients receiving palliative care experience stigma associated with their illness, personal identity, and healthcare utilization. These stigmas can occur at any stage of the disease process. Varying stigmas combine to cause palliative care patients to feel misunderstood, contribute to treatment barriers, and further negative stereotypes held by clinicians.

There is a paucity of data reporting the positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV) of acute declines in lung function on chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). We sought to define the predictive ability of single or repeated forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV) declines for at least 3 weeks on the development of CLAD or death by 1-year. We analyzed 340 subjects with at least 3 years of follow-up data from two lung transplant centers.

Background: With more than 15,000 annual deaths from head and neck cancer (HNC), an important aspect of end-of-life care for these patients is place of death. Recent evidence suggests an increasing preference for home/hospice at end of life; however, it is unclear whether there is variation in home/hospice use based on region or urban status. We described differences in the place of death of HNC patients based on their region and urban status.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) are associated with aberrant immune function, widespread inflammation, and altered intestinal blood flow. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) surrounding the mesenteric vasculature can modulate vascular function and control the local immune cell population, but its structure and function have never been investigated in IBD. We used an IL10 mouse model of colitis that shares features with human IBD to test the hypothesis that IBD is associated with (1) impaired ability of PVAT to dilate mesenteric arteries and (2) changes in PVAT resident adipocyte and immune cell populations.

Several microRNAs (miRNAs), including miR-221-5p, Let-7b-5p, miR-21-5p, miR-9-5p, miR-126-3p, and miR-222-3p, were recently found to be enriched in circulating exosomes of patients with non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). These miRNAs distinguished cancer cases from controls with high precision and were predicted to modulate the expression of genes within the oncogenic LINE-1 regulatory network. To test this hypothesis, plasma exosomes from controls, early, and late-stage NSCLC patients were co-cultured with non-tumorigenic lung epithelial cells for 72 h and processed for measurements of gene expression.

Background: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry (CFFPR) maintains clinical data, including history of solid organ transplant, on people with cystic fibrosis (CF) who obtain care at CF Foundation-accredited care centers. The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) database is a collection of national data related to organ transplantation that supports research to evaluate solid organ transplant candidate and recipient outcomes.

Methods: Individuals in the CFFPR were matched to SRTR records using an algorithm that compared names, last four digits of social security numbers, date of birth and date of death.

Unlabelled: Persistent DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are enigmatically implicated in neurodegenerative diseases including Huntington's disease (HD), the inherited late-onset disorder caused by CAG repeat elongations in Huntingtin (HTT). Here we combine biochemistry, computation and molecular cell biology to unveil a mechanism whereby HTT coordinates a Transcription-Coupled Non-Homologous End-Joining (TC-NHEJ) complex. HTT joins TC-NHEJ proteins PNKP, Ku70/80, and XRCC4 with chromatin remodeler Brahma-related Gene 1 (BRG1) to resolve transcription-associated DSBs in brain.

A growing number of studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) can exert oncogenic or tumor suppressor activities in a variety of cancers, including lung cancer. Given their presence in exosome preparations, microRNA molecules may in fact participate in exosomal intercellular transfers and signaling. In the present study, we examined the profile of 25 circulating exosomal microRNAs in ostensibly healthy controls compared to patients with squamous cell lung cancers (SQCLC) or lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD).

Article Synopsis
  • In 2015, a survey indicated gaps in cystic fibrosis (CF) physicians' knowledge about lung transplant (LTx) referrals, prompting the creation of new referral guidelines and the introduction of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) treatment for many patients.
  • A survey of CF center directors revealed that while many physicians recognize key indicators for LTx, a significant number still delay referrals for patients who qualify based on their lung function.
  • Despite improvements in understanding transplant criteria, many physicians express uncertainty about the best timing for referrals, especially for patients on ETI, indicating a need for updated guidelines as more data on ETI's long-term effects are available.

Purpose Of Review: In 2019, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a breakthrough therapeutic for cystic fibrosis, elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI), because of its profound effect on lung function in large phase III clinical trials. ETI acts directly on the dysfunctional protein that causes the systemic manifestations of cystic fibrosis and also leads to improvement in nonpulmonary symptoms of cystic fibrosis. Transplant recipients were excluded from the pivotal clinical trials of ETI but may stand to benefit from correction of the underlying protein defect.

Myocardial reperfusion injury (MRI) accounts for up to 50% of the final size in acute myocardial infarction and other conditions associated with ischemia-reperfusion. Currently, there is still no therapy to prevent MRI, but it is well known that oxidative stress has a key role in its mechanism. We previously reduced MRI in rats through a combined antioxidant therapy (CAT) of ascorbic acid, N-acetylcysteine, and deferoxamine.

Unlabelled: Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are an attractive therapeutic platform for the prevention and treatment of influenza virus infection. There are two major glycoproteins on the influenza virion surface: hemagglutinin (HA), which is responsible for viral attachment and entry, and neuraminidase (NA), which mediates viral egress by enzymatically cleaving sialic acid to release budding particles from the host cell surface. Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) that target the conserved HA central stalk region, such as CR9114, can inhibit both viral entry and egress.
