Article Synopsis
  • A 15-year-old boy with a history of herpes zoster virus infection presented with a central corneal scar in his right eye, reducing his vision to 20/200 after a year of no improvement from medications like oral valacyclovir and topical corticosteroids.
  • Upon examination, the right eye showed significant corneal opacity without vascularization, while the left eye had a macular scar but no corneal issues.
  • The case raises questions about potential surgical interventions, such as phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), corneal transplantation options, and setting up prophylactic treatments to ensure proper healing post-surgery.

Background: Although chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) incidence has increased, there is limited evidence to guide patient management after surgical evacuation.

Objective: To identify predictors of reoperation and functional outcome after CSDH surgical evacuation.

Methods: We identified all patients with CSDH between 2010 and 2018.

The optimal treatment for intractable epistaxis is still controversial. Various studies have demonstrated high success rates and low complication rates for endovascular embolization. Herein, the authors report an institutional experience and meta-analysis in terms of efficacy and safety of endovascular embolization of intractable epistaxis.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with pulmonary involvement and cardiac arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Adenosine is commonly used to treat SVT and is generally safe, but is rarely associated with bronchospasm. There are no data regarding the safety of adenosine use in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and physicians may hesitate to use it in such patients.

The direct modulation of T cell responses is an emerging therapeutic strategy with the potential to modulate undesired immune responses including, autoimmune disease, and allogeneic cells transplantation. We have previously demonstrated that poly(lactide-co-glycolide) particles were able to modulate T cell responses indirectly through antigen-presenting cells (APCs). In this report, we investigated the design of nanoparticles that can directly interact and modulate T cells by coating the membranes from APCs onto nanoparticles to form membrane-coated nanoparticles (MCNPs).

Background: The transradial approach has increasingly been used for neurointerventions because of the improved safety profile compared with transfemoral. However, it is important to be aware of potential complications such as radial artery (RA) spasm, RA occlusion, pseudoaneurysm, extravasation, arteriovenous fistula, and wrist hematoma as well as their management.

Objective: To present our institution's experience with the prevention and management of local access site complications associated with the transradial approach for neuroendovascular interventions.

Background: The treatment of wide-necked and bifurcation aneurysms has become a common indication for the Woven Endobridge (WEB) device. In many instances, WEB embolization fails and retreatment strategies for the recanalized aneurysms have not been established and may be challenging.

Objective: To report an experience with retreatment strategies after WEB failure in 7 cases involving various aneurysm shapes, sizes, and location using multiple strategies including endovascular modalities and microsurgical clip ligation.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate and compare rates of unplanned reoperation and complications after undergoing either fronto-orbital advancement (anterior cranial vault expansion) or posterior cranial vault expansion as an early surgery in the management of syndromic craniosynostosis.

Materials And Methods: A literature search was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Relevant articles were identified in 2 electronic databases (PubMed and EMBASE) from the time of electronic publication to November 2020.

Ewing sarcomas are driven by EWS-ETS fusions, most commonly EWS-FLI1, which promotes widespread metabolic reprogramming, including activation of serine biosynthesis. We previously reported that serine biosynthesis is also activated in Ewing sarcoma by the scaffolding protein menin through as yet undefined mechanisms. Here, we investigated whether EWS-FLI1 and/or menin orchestrate serine biosynthesis via modulation of ATF4, a stress-response gene that acts as a master transcriptional regulator of serine biosynthesis in other tumors.

This article provides an overview of the orthodontic preparation prior to secondary alveolar bone grafting of alveolar defects in those with complete cleft lip and palate. Use of cone beam computed tomography in diagnosis and treatment planning for addressing alveolar clefts, the rationale for maxillary expansion prior to alveolar bone grafting, key steps in differential maxillary expansion, potential adverse effects, and outcomes associated with maxillary expansion are provided in this overview.

Background: Limited outcome data exist regarding the survival of microvascular free flaps for head and neck reconstruction in children. The objectives of this study were to perform a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis comparing the survival of the most commonly used free flaps used for head and neck reconstruction in children.

Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus was conducted using various keywords up to January 1, 2015.

Background: Free tissue transfer is commonly used in the reconstruction of post-ablative defects of the mandible. Due to lack of statistical power, comparing the survival of various free flaps, even in large studies, is challenging. The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis comparing the survival of the most commonly used free flaps for mandibular reconstruction.

Cleft lip and palate are among the most common congenital anomalies in humans. The treatment of this group of patients is best conducted by a multidisciplinary team approach. This article discusses the accepted treatment algorithm and timeline, as well as special considerations for this patient group when performing orthognathic surgery.

In this article, we show that the dielectric constant of lead-free ferroelectric ceramics based on the solid solution (1-x)(Bi(0.5)Na(0.5))TiO(3)-xBaTiO(3), with compositions at or near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), can be tuned by a local applied electric field.

Dermoid cysts are congenital lesions that commonly arise from nondisjunction of surface ectoderm from deeper neuroectodermal structures. They tend to be found along planes of embryonic closure. Classification by site is helpful for diagnostic planning and surgical treatment.

Accidental falls of our elderly, and physical injuries resulting, represent a major health and economic. Falls are the most common causes of serious injuries and a major health threats in the stratum of older population. Early detection of a fall is a key factor when trying to provide adequate care to the elderly person who has suffered an accident at home.

This article discusses the recent advances and basic concepts of skeletal anchorage devices of various types and reviews the current literature on their use. Temporary skeletal anchorage devices allow orthodontic movements that were previously thought to be difficult if not impossible. Much like the concepts introduced during the beginnings of orthognathic dentofacial teams, treatment that uses skeletal anchorage requires interdisciplinary collaboration and planning with regular interaction, continuing education, and a regular review of the latest relevant literature.

The comprehensive management of cleft lip and palate has received significant attention in the surgical literature over the last half century. It is the most common congenital facial malformation and has a significant developmental, physical, and psychological impact on those with the deformity and their families. In the United States, current estimates place the prevalence of cleft lip and palate or isolated cleft lip at approximately 1 in 600.
