Retrospective case series of high-density silicone oil (Oxane HD) in severe proliferative vitreorretinal retinal detachment patients.

Background: Describe complications and clinical outcomes of heavy silicone oil (HSO) Oxane HD® use as an alternative to overcome the challenges of performing vitrectomy to treat tractional and rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).

Methods: A retrospective, observational study was performed on patients from one center from August 2014 to Aug 2023. It was included patients who underwent surgery using HSO Oxane HD® to treat rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with PVR or mixed tractional and rhegmatogenous diabetic retinal detachment.

Surgical technique for removal of high-density silicone oil (Oxane HD).

The main drawback for the use of heavy silicone oil (HSO) Oxane HD is the difficulties it presents during removal. It differs from conventional silicone oil removal because it progressively concentrates in the posterior pole during the removal because of its heavier than water density. We describe a technique to facilitate proper HSO Oxane HD removal and minimize residual posterior bubbles and intraoperative complications.

Biocompatibility of polyvinyl alcohol/trisodium trimetaphosphate as vitreous substitute in experimental vitrectomy model in rabbits.

Synthetic hydrogels have been proposed as vitreous substitutes recently. This study aims to evaluate the biocompatibility of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) crosslinked with trisodium trimetaphosphate (SMTP) hydrogel in rabbit vitrectomized eyes. Seven animals were submitted to pars plana vitrectomy and the vitreous was replaced by PVA/SMTP hydrogel.

Thoracic sympathectomy at the level of the fourth and fifth ribs for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Objective: To describe the clinical results and the degree of satisfaction of patients submitted to thoracic sympathectomy at the level of the fourth and fifth ribs (R4-R5) for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Methods: We included 118 patients diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis and having undergone axillary sympathectomy at the R4-R5 level between March of 2003 and December of 2007 at the Paraná Federal University Hospital de Clínicas, located in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. All procedures were carried out by the same surgeon.

[Impact of antiretroviral therapy on occurrences of macrocytosis in patients with HIV/AIDS in Maringá, State of Paraná].

Introduction: AIDS is a disease caused by HIV that compromises the organism's immune system. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has promoted substantial improvement in the prognosis for this disease and in HIV/AIDS patients' quality of life. During prolonged treatment, certain hematological disorders are observed, such as anemia and macrocytosis, as well as deficiencies of micronutrient such as vitamin B12 and folic acid.

Endoscopic lumbar sympathectomy following thoracic sympathectomy in patients with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis.

Background: Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis is a common disease that leads to significant psychosocial strain for the affected person. Although the treatment of palmar symptoms with endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) is clinically established, there are few data on the efficacy of an endoscopic lumbar sympathectomy (ELS) for the elimination of plantar symptoms. Especially the occurrence of unwanted side effects associated with sequential ETS and ELS has not been examined sufficiently.
