Background: In many plastic surgery operations that are undertaken through relatively small incisions resulting in deep-seated operating fields, sliding knots with a self-locking property are preferred by plastic surgeons for 3 reasons: simplicity, reliability, and versatility. We describe a new and versatile sliding knot that can be easily sledded and locked.
Methods: The technique of knot tying is described in detail as a stepwise approach with photographs.
Information on malaria-associated anemia in adult patients is scarce in South American populations. From 2004 to 2006, malaria patients 18 to 45 years of age were recruited in a descriptive cross-sectional study from two different towns: Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon (120 patients) where Plasmodium falciparum incidence is lower ( approximately 20%), and in Tumaco on the Colombian Pacific Coast (126 patients) where P. falciparum incidence is higher ( approximately 90%).

Objective: To elucidate whether the risk of macrosomia, large for gestational age (LGA) and small for gestational age (SGA) is influenced by maternal body mass index and glucose tolerance differently in male and female fetuses.
Methods: A population study was conducted in 16 general hospitals from the Spanish National Health Service that included 9270 consecutive women with singleton pregnancies and without a former diagnosis of diabetes mellitus who delivered 4793 male and 4477 female newborns. Logistic regression analyses were performed to predict the effect of body mass index (BMI) category and glucose tolerance on macrosomia, large for gestational age newborns (LGA) and small for gestational age newborns (SGA) Separate analyses according to foetal sex were carried out for each outcome.
Major histocompatibility complex class II DQA and DQB genes have been shown to be under positive selection in certain mammalian species but not in others, fuelling a debate about how their polymorphism has evolved. In this study, we have analysed whether polymorphism in the peptide-binding region (PBR) of DQA (190 sequences, 11 species) and DQB (209 sequences, 7 species) molecules is positively selected by using both approximate (Nei-Gojobori, Li-Wu-Luo and Pamilo-Bianchi-Li) and maximum-likelihood methods. The results obtained with approximate methods were rather inconsistent for DQA, probably due to the high inaccuracy with which d(S) (PBR) is estimated, whereas evidence of positive selection was observed for most of the DQB PBR sequences.

It was found that OUR and CRP can be used for assessing the viable cell concentration and growth phases of the culture. Before nutrient depletion, OUR increased exponentially with viable cell concentration, whereas CRP decreased monotonically until cell viability started to decrease.
