Microgravity and the implications for wound healing.

Wound healing is a sophisticated response ubiquitous to various traumatic stimuli leading to an anatomical/functional disruption. The aim of present article was to review the current evidence regarding the effects of microgravity on wound healing dynamics. Modulation of haemostatic phase because of alteration of platelet quantity and function seems probable.

The hypothesis of 'biophysical matrix contraction': wound contraction revisited.

Wound contraction is an orchestrated phenomenon that contributes to closure of wounds that heal by secondary intention. However, excessive and premature contraction results in scarring. Although the exact mechanism of contraction is unknown, the wound closure process is accompanied by and followed by changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the wound and periwound tissues during the biological transformation.

Factitial pemphigus-like lesions.

The maxillofacial region is rarely subjected to self-inflicted conditions such as factitious disease. Nasal ulceration, facial emphysema, periorbital ecchymosis, mandibular subluxation, gingival and mucosal ulceration, dental and salivary gland pain and glossopharyngeal neuralgia have been reported as possible manifestations of factitious disease. We report a case of a young woman who presented with unilateral bullous and ulcerative oral and erythematous facial lesions that were initially diagnosed as pemphigus vulgaris but was later determined to be secondary to self-inflicted injuries.
