Despite its prevalence, the long-term neurobehavioral risks of asymptomatic cCMV infections are not fully understood.

Biodegradable polymers are desirable to mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste in the environment. Over the past several decades, the development of organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (OROP) has made the synthesis of many new types of biodegradable polymers possible. In this research article, the first example of an oxygen atom transfer reagent pendant on a biodegradable polymer backbone is reported.

Nitrile Oxidation at a Ruthenium Complex leading to Intermolecular Imido Group Transfer.

The oxidation of an acetonitrile ligand coordinated to ruthenium is explored in deuterated dimethylsulfoxide by H NMR spectroscopy. When oxidized with an iodosoarene oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reagent, kinetic studies demonstrate that the nitrile ligand does not dissociate before reacting. Instead, OAT to the central nitrile carbon is implicated (nitrile oxidation), and is further supported by the product of the reaction, -acyl-dimethylsulfoximine.

The target audience for each topic varies, but the majority of them apply to all disciplines such as direct patient care roles (emergency room technicians, nurses, paramedics, advanced practice practitioners, resident physicians, attending physicians, etc.) and emergency department clerks/coordinators.

The Family Meal Model: Influences on Family Mealtime Participation.

The family meal affords benefits such as positive nutritional habits, trust building, connecting, parent modeling, and teaching. During the school-aged years, families can support children's development of health behaviors and family routines. This interdisciplinary study examined families' experiences of mealtimes and the factors that support or hinder mealtime participation.

How did the television get in the child's bedroom? Analysis of family interviews.

Objective: Although recent research has shown associations between a television in the bedroom of children (BTV) and obesity, medical and negative societal consequences, the family decision making process supporting or opposing BTV is not yet understood. A qualitative research approach elicited rich, decision making experiences of families.

Methods: Structured family interviews (n=21) in spring 2011 in Oklahoma City captured direct quotations about family beliefs and practices related to BTV.

Blood lactate and hormonal responses to prototype flywheel ergometer workouts.

The purpose of the study was to compare blood lactate and hormonal responses with flywheel ergometer (FERG) leg presses for preliminary assessment of workouts best suited for future in-flight resistance exercise. Comprised of 10 repetition sets, the workouts entailed 3 sets of concentric and eccentric (CE3) actions, or concentric-only actions done for 3 (CO3) or 6 (CO6) sets. Methods employed included assessment of blood lactate concentrations ([BLa-]) before and 5 minutes postexercise.

Impact of acceleration on blood lactate values derived from high-speed resistance exercise.

Acceleration, or an increase in the rate of movement, is integral to success in many sports. Improvements in acceleration often entail workouts done at intensities that elicit higher blood lactate concentrations (BLa). The purpose of the study is to assess the impact of acceleration on BLa.

Growth hormone levels after flywheel ergometer exercise: correlation with independent variables.

Introduction: In-flight muscle mass and strength losses are likely exacerbated by low growth hormone (GH) concentrations. Factors associated with exercise may foretell resultant GH levels and thereby help blunt future mass and strength losses.

Methods: To assess the ability of variables to predict GH variance from resistive exercise done on a flywheel ergometer (FE) designed for in-flight exercise, subjects (N=17) performed three types of workouts on the device.

Anthropometry as a predictor of high speed performance.

To assess anthropometry as a predictor of high-speed performance, subjects performed four seated knee- and hip-extension workouts with their left leg on an inertial exercise trainer (Impulse Technologies, Newnan GA). Workouts, done exclusively in either the tonic or phasic contractile mode, entailed two one-minute sets separated by a 90-second rest period and yielded three performance variables: peak force, average force and work. Subjects provided the following anthropometric data: height, weight, body mass index, as well as total, upper and lower left leg lengths.

Performance evaluation of a high-speed inertial exercise trainer.

A high-speed, low-resistance inertial exercise trainer (IET, Impulse Training Systems, Newnan, Ga) is increasingly employed in rehabilitative and athletic performance settings. Repetitions on an IET are done through a large range of motion because multijoint movements occur over more than one plane of motion, with no limitation on velocities or accelerations attained. The current study purpose is to assess data reproducibility from an instrumented IET through multiple test-retest measures.

Chronic leptin administration increases insulin-stimulated skeletal muscle glucose uptake and transport.

Leptin, the product of the ob gene, has been shown to reduce fat mass, food intake, hyperglycemia, and hyperinsulinemia and to increase whole-body glucose disposal. However, it is unknown if leptin improves insulin action in skeletal muscle. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to determine if chronic leptin administration increases insulin-stimulated skeletal muscle glucose uptake and transport.

Sex differences in arachidonate cyclo-oxygenase products in elicited rat peritoneal macrophages.

Peritoneal macrophages were elicited by Freund's incomplete adjuvant from adult male and female Fisher 344 rats. The release of prostaglandin E2 and thromboxane B2 from these macrophages was determined by radioimmunoassay. The basal release of these products was the same for males and females.

Glucocorticoid protection against PAF-acether toxicity in mice.

Intravenous platelet activating factor (PAF-acether, 10 to 25 micrograms/kg body weight) produced dose-dependent mortality in both male and female mice. Pretreatment with indomethacin (50 mg/kg), verapamil (40 mg/kg) or nifedipine (4 mg/kg) failed to inhibit the lethal effect of 20 micrograms/kg PAF-acether. This suggests that neither arachidonate cyclo-oxygenase products nor availability of extracellular Ca2+ mediate the toxic action.
