Phenolic compounds are one of the main contributors to water source contamination worldwide. In this review, the data collected on Elsevier, Scopus, and Pubmed, considering papers published between 2000 and 2023, showed more than 60 different phenols have been identified in water matrix (<0.065-179,000,000 ng L).

Nitrogen (N) compounds can occur in water resources from natural and anthropogenic activities. It is ideal that these contaminants be removed before water consumption. As water quality has been affected by increased salinity and pH variation, more advanced and robust technologies such as electrodialysis (ED) can be considered for simultaneous desalination and pollutant removal.

Phenolic compounds are widely spread in surface water, mainly in developing countries, where sewage and wastewater treatment are still reduced. Thus, this work quantified these pollutants in the Doce River analyzing the associated risk for the environment and human health. This river is in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil and was recently impacted by the collapse of a mining dam that compromised the resilience of the entire watershed.

Brazil has one of the greatest hydroelectric potential in the world with high number of reservoirs for the electricity generation. However, little is known about the influence of these environments on the water quality. The water quality monitoring data from 14 stations distributed throughout the Irapé HPP reservoir (lentic environment), and its main tributaries (lotic environment), between the years 2008 and 2018, were evaluated and compared to assess the spatial variability of water quality.
