A theoretical model of time-dependent peristaltic viscous fluid flow through a curved channel in the presence of an applied magnetic field is investigated. The results for stream function, pressure distribution and mechanical efficiency are obtained under the assumptions of long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximation. Pressure fluctuations due to an integral and a non-integral number of waves along the channel length are discussed under influence of channel curvature and magnetic parameter.

The use of ordered, high-aspect ratio nanopillar arrays on the surface of silicon-based chips to enhance signal intensity in DNA microarrays is reported. These nanopillars consisting either of a single silicon dioxide substrate or a dual silicon/silicon dioxide substrate are fabricated using deep-UV lithography followed by reactive ion etching. These pillar type arrays provide a three-dimensional high surface-density platform that increases the immobilization capacity of captured probes, enhances target accessibility and reduces background noise interference in DNA microarrays, leading to improved signal-to-noise ratios, sensitivity and specificity.

Enhanced microfiltration devices configured with hydrodynamic trapping and a rain drop bypass filtering architecture for microbial cells detection.

Ultra-fine (<1 microm) microfilters are required to effectively trap microbial cells. We designed microfilters featuring a rain drop bypass architecture, which significantly reduces the likelihood of clogging at the cost of limited cell loss. The new rain drop bypass architecture configuration has a substantially lower pressure drop and allows a better efficiency in trapping protozoan cells (Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia) in comparison to our previous generation of a microfilter device.

Coastal subsystems formed by interaction of various processes, impacted by natural hazards like tsunami and storms, pose irreversible morphological changes. Vellar estuary, located on the southeast coast of India, with huge sand dunes (of 3-6m height and spread to 560 ha) and barrier islands, has undergone extensive morphological changes due to the giant Indian Ocean tsunami that occurred on 26th December 2004. The damage caused by the tsunami has been quantified using extensive field data collected during pre- and post-tsunami periods through Real Time Kinematic GPS (for mapping coastal features and beach profiles) and Geographic Information System (GIS) couple.

Plasma dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity was estimated in non-pregnant women, normotensive pregnant women during the third trimester and women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Non-pregnant women from a high income group had significantly higher DBH activity than their low income counterparts. DBH activity was significantly elevated in women with PIH when compared with non-pregnant and normal pregnant women from a low income group, but was lower than the level in well-nourished, non-pregnant normotensive women.
