Is Routine Pathologic Evaluation of Sebaceous Cysts Necessary?: A 15-Year Retrospective Review of a Single Institution.

A question arose in our practice of whether all cysts considered sebaceous should be sent for pathologic evaluation. To address this controversial topic, we performed a retrospective study of our single institution's histopathology database. A natural language search of the CoPath database across the institution was undertaken using the diagnosis of sebaceous cyst, epidermal cyst, epidermoid cyst, epithelial cyst, infundibular cyst, pilar cyst, trichilemmal cyst, and steatocystoma.

Stabilization of the chest wall: autologous and alloplastic reconstructions.

The goals of chest wall stabilization include maintenance of a rigid airtight cavity, protection of the thoracic and abdominal contents, optimization of respiration, and, whenever possible, an aesthetic reconstruction. Evidence suggests that bony fixation results in reduced ventilator dependence, a shorter overall hospital stay, and improved upper extremity function. We prefer to accomplish this with autologous tissue alone (such as the pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, or rectus abdominus muscle flaps) for small to moderate defects.

Successful surgical treatment of advanced erythema elevatum diutinum.

Erythema elevatum diutinum is a rare, chronic cutaneous vasculitis that presents with plaques or nodules on the extensor surfaces of extremities. Although the exact pathogenesis is unknown, patients usually have an underlying systemic medical problem such as malignancy, autoimmune disease or HIV. Management of the cutaneous manifestations is aimed at controlling the underlying disease process, in addition to medical therapy directed at suppressing the lesions.

A nationwide review of the associations among cervical spine injuries, head injuries, and facial fractures.

Background: : Several small studies have investigated the relationship among facial fractures, c-spine injuries, and head injuries with varying results. Determining this correlation at a national level would be the first step in updating the trauma imaging protocol. The purpose of this study was to review the incidence of facial fractures, c-spine injuries, and head injuries at trauma centers across the United States.

A new technique of internal suture mastopexy for mild to moderate breast ptosis.

Background: Current mastopexy techniques rely on incisions on the breast to correct ptosis. Trading a ptotic breast for a visibly scarred breast can be a difficult choice.

Objective And Methods: A technique of internal suture mastopexy that consists of plicating sutures placed in the superficial fascia of the breast from the deep surface is presented.
