The quinoa oil presents benefits to health, but its low water dispersibility in the aqueous matrix and instability of bioactive compounds is challenging for food application. This study performed the physicochemical and chemical characterization of quinoa oil and evaluated its water dispersibility and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity after nanoencapsulation in porcine gelatin and combination with whey protein isolate by emulsification O/W technique. Thus, three formulations were obtained: 1) OG-containing quinoa oil and porcine gelatin in aqueous phase 2; 2) OWG1-containing quinoa oil, whey protein isolate, and porcine gelatin in aqueous phase 2; and 3) OWG2-containing quinoa oil and whey protein isolate in aqueous phase 1, and porcine gelatin in aqueous phase 2.

Public health concerns exist surrounding the epidemic of the Zika virus (ZIKV) and the rapid growth of transplantation in developing countries, including endemic zones of active arbovirus transmission, as well as travel to such regions by potential organ donors and recipients. Few data exist regarding the clinical characteristics of ZIKV infection in immunocompromised hosts. Laboratory screening protocols for transplantation to differentiate ZIKV infections from other endemic viral diseases and for the detection of possible donor-derived infection have not been stated.

Background: Maternal supplementation with vitamin A is one of the strategies for controlling its deficiency in the mother-child dyad, although studies with animals showed that supplementation with high doses of vitamin A reduces the levels of α-tocopherol (vitamin E) in the mother's serum and milk. The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of maternal supplementation with vitamin A on the concentration of retinol and α-tocopherol in human milk.

Methods: Healthy puerperal women were randomly distributed into a control group (n = 44) and a supplemented group (n = 44).

Article Synopsis
  • Newborns are at high risk for vitamin E deficiency, and this study examined how natural and synthetic forms of alpha-tocopherol (α-TOH) supplementation, alongside maternal sources, affects α-TOH levels in colostrum.
  • The study involved 109 lactating women randomly divided into three groups: a control group without supplementation, a group receiving natural α-TOH, and another receiving synthetic α-TOH, with blood and colostrum samples analyzed for vitamin E levels.
  • Results showed that both forms of supplementation improved α-TOH concentrations in colostrum, with natural α-TOH leading to a higher increase (57%) compared to synthetic α-TOH (39%).

In Portugal, commercial milk is obtained almost entirely from cows of the Holstein breed. However, other breeds may also show dairy aptitude, and produce milk of good quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the breed factor in the vitamin contents of milks from Holstein and the autochthonous Portuguese breed Minhota, as well as possible variations due to season.

Background: Minhota and Holstein Friesian cows (15 from each breed) were selected from several farms located in the north of Portugal, all under similar feeding regime. Milk samples from individual cows were collected once a month, during one year, to take into account different lactation stages and feeding seasonal changes.

Results: Holstein milk was found to have higher content of total polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-6, and trans fatty acids, while Minhota milk had significantly higher monounsaturated fatty acids content.

Introduction: The therapeutic potential of adult stem cells for the treatment of chronic diseases is becoming increasingly evident over the last few years. In the present study, we sought to assess whether the infusion of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (MoSCs) and mesenchymal cells (MSCs) could reduce/stabilize the rate of progression of chronic renal failure (CRF) in rats.

Methods: We used the 5/6 renal mass reduction model to induce chronic renal failure in male Wistar rats.

Background: It has been shown that azithromycin improves cyclosporine-induced gingival hyperplasia (GH), but its efficacy was never compared against an efficient oral hygiene program (OHP). The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of azithromycin plus OHP versus OHP alone in patients with cyclosporine-induced GH.

Methods: After periodontal evaluation, 20 renal transplant recipients received detailed oral hygiene instructions and a complete OHP, and were randomized to control (OHP) or azithromycin groups (OHP plus azithromycin).

In this work it has been shown that the routine ASTM methods (ASTM 4052, ASTM D 445, ASTM D 4737, ASTM D 93, and ASTM D 86) recommended by the ANP (the Brazilian National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) to determine the quality of diesel/biodiesel blends are not suitable to prevent the adulteration of B2 or B5 blends with vegetable oils. Considering the previous and actual problems with fuel adulterations in Brazil, we have investigated the application of vibrational spectroscopy (Fourier transform (FT) near infrared spectrometry and FT-Raman) to identify adulterations of B2 and B5 blends with vegetable oils. Partial least square regression (PLS), principal component regression (PCR), and artificial neural network (ANN) calibration models were designed and their relative performances were evaluated by external validation using the F-test.

The increasing use of cyclosporine A (CSA) in organ transplants and in the treatment of autoimmune diseases has increased the incidence of cyclosporine A-related adverse effects, including gingival hyperplasia (GH). GH causes esthetic, speech, mastication and tooth growth problems in the affected patients. The prevalence of cyclosporine-induced GH varies in different studies and may be as high as 85%, depending on the diagnostic criteria.
