The world's population is rapidly ageing, with conditions such as urinary incontinence, which are especially prevalent among older adults, expected to rise in prevalence as a result. Urinary incontinence is particularly common in older women; however, despite its profound impact on every aspect of women's health and wellbeing, it is often minimised by both individual patients and the wider healthcare system. Francesca Ramadan delves into the prevalence of and psychosocial effects and patient-related factors related to urinary incontinence in older women.

Many of the approaches for managing lymphoedema are straightforward and easily accessible, allowing individuals to take considerable charge of their care. As a result, nurses can play a vital role in lymphoedema treatment by equipping patients with crucial knowledge and offering practical assistance to foster self-management. Francesca Ramadan elaborates upon the aspects of patient education that the community nurse must promote and support to enable individuals with lymphoedema to take back control.

Previously, we have demonstrated that amiodarone (AM), a widely used antiarrhythmic drug, and its major metabolite desethylamiodarone (DEA) both affect several mitochondrial processes in isolated heart and liver mitochondria. Also, we have established DEA's antitumor properties in various cancer cell lines and in a rodent metastasis model. In the present study, we compared AM's and DEA's mitochondrial and antineoplastic effects in a human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line.

While very much in its infancy in terms of becoming an established tool, the use of digital technology in community nursing is steadily growing, despite the persistent barriers to, and challenges encountered in its uptake and implementation. The mobile nature and high workload of a community nurse's daily practice should facilitate the rapid uptake of time-saving technology. However, there are indications that technology may not be the panacea it was originally proclaimed to be.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of diseases that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which is caused by damage to the airways or other parts of the lung that blocks airflow and eventually makes it difficult for the patient to breathe. As COPD is terminal, the primary goals of treatment are to control symptoms, improve quality of life and reduce exacerbations and mortality. Community nurses can play a vital role in maintaining patients' quality of life and daily functioning, but the ability to access further education in the domain of COPD treatment and allocate dedicated time to patient care is necessary to achieving good outcomes.

The present work evaluated kiwi juice addition alongside pasteurization (at 85 °C for 5 min) or microwave treatment (for 3 min) on the quality improvement of sugarcane juice. The juice was treated in the presence of kiwi juice (0-8%), and its physicochemical properties and microbial load were compared with raw juice. The study also highlighted the key enzymes causing sugarcane juice discoloration, peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), by quantifying kiwi juice constituents using GC-MS and monitoring their effects by molecular docking.

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is often treated a hygienic challenge, rather than a serious condition with potentially life-threatening consequences. More appropriate education on the management strategies specific to IAD is required, in order for personalised and effective care that reflects the critical nature of this condition to be provided. Francesca Ramadan provides an overview of the key elements of best practice in IAD management and treatment.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a pediatric cancer associated with aggressiveness and a tendency to develop metastases. Fusion-negative rhabdomyosarcoma (FN-RMS) is the most commonly occurring subtype of RMS, where metastatic disease can hinder treatment success and decrease survival rates. RMS-derived exosomes were previously demonstrated to be enriched with miRNAs, including miR-1246, possibly contributing to disease aggressiveness.

With their wide breadth of expertise and the ability to leverage the therapeutic relationship, community nurses are ideally placed to provide treatment and support to an extensive variety of patients with a diverse range of conditions. However, to date, oral health has remained a neglected domain in the community, especially in older demographics. Francesca Ramadan explores the barriers to community nurse provision of oral healthcare and the solutions proposed to overcome these challenges.

Water, as an indispensable constituent of life, serves as the primary source of sustenance for all living things on Earth. The contamination of surface water with heavy metals poses a significant global health risk to humans, animals, and plants. Sharkiya Governorate, situated in the East Nile Delta region of Egypt, is particularly susceptible to surface water pollution due to various industrial, agricultural, and urban activities.

Background: Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) represents a growing health burden. Previous studies suggest that blood metabolite levels influence risk of LOAD.

Objective: We used a genetics-based study design which may overcome limitations of other epidemiological studies to assess the influence of metabolite levels on LOAD risk.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a specific type of massage performed by specialists that aims to enhance the filling and emptying of lymph vessels, is often recommended as an essential part of a successful management strategy for lymphoedema. However, the literature on its efficacy is often contradictory, and its addition may not always be necessary. To ensure optimal understanding of practitioners and benefit to patients, Francesca Ramadan summarises the evidence-based advantages and limitations of MLD.

Ostomy surgery is a life-changing intervention, with many significant and challenging lifestyle changes expected from the individual. The community nurse, with their wide-ranging scope of practice and intimate access to patients' lives, are well-placed to support individuals to manage their condition, especially in the case of a high-output stoma, a relatively common complication with potentially deadly consequences. The author outlines the practical interventions the community nurse can offer to the patient to optimise stomal output, including fluid restriction, dietary changes and support in self-care and management.

Robotic technology and functional electrical stimulation (FES) have emerged as highly effective rehabilitative techniques for individuals with neuromuscular diseases, showcasting their ability to restore motor functions. Within the proposed study, we developed and tested a new hybrid controller combining an upper-limb exoskeleton with FES to enhance haptic feedback when performing task-oriented and bimanual movement, like pick-and-place, in a virtual environment. We investigated the performance of the proposed approach on eight unimpaired participants providing haptic feedback either only by the exoskeleton or by the hybrid system.

Background: Demands on health systems due to COVID-19 are substantial, but drivers of healthcare utilization are not well defined in non-severe SARS-CoV-2 infections. Among a prospective cohort of frontline workers from July 2020 to February 2023, we assessed predictors of healthcare utilization during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: Weekly specimens tested via real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction analysis.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous throughout the United States. Previous studies have shown PFAS exposure to be associated with a reduced immune response. Lymphorrhoea-otherwise known as 'wet' or 'leaky' legs-is an increasingly common condition that many community nurses will encounter in their daily practice; however, until relatively recently, evidence-based literature on its management was limited, and treatment modalities only tackled the symptoms instead of addressing the cause. In this article, Francesca Ramadan highlights the devastating impact of this condition, and the resources available to community practitioners to assist their patients to live well with lymphoedema.

Major depression (MD) is a serious psychiatric illness afflicting nearly 5% of the world's population. A large correlational literature suggests that loneliness is a prospective risk factor for MD; correlational assocations of this nature may be confounded for a variety of reasons. This report uses Mendelian Randomization (MR) to examine potentially causal associations between loneliness and MD.

A wound care practitioner will likely encounter and care for an increasing number of patients with a wider variety of skin tones on a daily basis. However, wound care research and education does not yet reflect the realities of clinical practice, resulting in compromised care provision and the reinforcement of healthcare inequities. Here, Francesca Ramadan outlines both the quantitative and qualitative steps that can be taken to facilitate more inclusive and culturally sensitive care provision in research, education and clinical practice.
