Semliki Forest virus (SFV) is a neuropathogenic alphavirus which is of interest both as a model neurotropic alphavirus and as an oncolytic virus with proven potency in preclinical cancer models. In laboratory mice, peripherally administered SFV infiltrates the central nervous system (CNS) and causes encephalitis of varying severity. The route of SFV CNS entrance is poorly understood but has been considered to occur through the blood-brain barrier.

In nearly one-third of the cases, it is detected during pregnancy when they present with complications. Infective endocarditis (IE) in pregnancy is rare, with an incidence of 1 in 100 000 pregnancies, and carries high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.

Neuro-ophthalmic outcomes after carotid intervention for ocular symptoms.

Background: The long-term neuro-ophthalmic outcomes after carotid intervention in patients presenting with preoperative visual symptoms vary widely based on the underlying etiology of retinal ischemia and are not well understood.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of consecutive patients presenting with retinal ischemia who subsequently underwent carotid intervention from January 2018 to December 2022. Patients were classified into three groups (group I: amaurosis fugax/vascular transient monocular vision loss, group II: ocular ischemic syndrome [OIS], and group III: central/branch retinal artery occlusion).

Purpose: The literature on factors predisposing to meniscal tears in the paediatric population focuses on concomitant injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL) or abnormal meniscus morphology such as discoid menisci. Patella alta has been associated with ACL ruptures but its association with meniscal tears has not been described. The purpose of our study was to evaluate whether abnormal patella height is associated with isolated meniscus tears in skeletally immature patients METHODS: We retrospectively analysed all patients under 16 years of age who had an isolated meniscal tear diagnosis confirmed on arthroscopic surgery.

The selection of sheep for temperament can change the temperament traits of the selected line and improve the welfare and production (reproduction, growth, immunity) of those animals. To understand the genetics that underly variation in temperament in sheep, and how selection on temperament can affect other production traits, a genome-wide association study was carried out.

Synthesis of tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-phosphagermines - trying to establish molecular fencing of reactive centers.

Novel tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-phosphagermines (3a and 4a) were synthesised from Ge(NR)-bridged 1,3-imidazole-2-thione derivative 2a; all structures were crystallographically confirmed. In going from rather small alkyl substituents (Me, Bu) at the nitrogen centers of the 1,3-imidazole-2-thione units to sterically more demanding R = Mes and changing the employed Ge reagent from (RN)GeCl to RNGeCl we achieved access to mixed functional bis(1,3-imidazole-2-thione)-substituted germanium derivative 2c. The latter was treated with MeLi and, subsequently, with PCl to yield a pentacyclic P,Ge-heterocycle (5); its formation was rationalized using DFT theoretical calculations.

Objective: The obesity paradox refers to a phenomenon by which obese individuals experience lower risk of mortality and even protective associations from chronic disease sequelae when compared with the non-obese and underweight population. Prior literature has demonstrated an obesity paradox after cardiac and other surgical procedures. However, the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and perioperative complications for patients undergoing major open lower extremity arterial revascularization is unclear.

So, this pilot study aimed to evaluate serum NF-κB levels in DPN patients.

Can Occupation-Based Interventions for People Living with Dementia and Their Spousal Caregivers Support Positive Aspects of Caregiving? A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aimed to explore the characteristics and outcomes of occupation-based interventions for people living with dementia and their spousal caregivers relating to positive aspects of caregiving. A conceptualization of positive aspects of caregiving was developed based on the existing literature encompassing three domains - quality of the caregiver/care receiver relationship, meaning of the caregiver's role in daily life, and caregiver's feeling of accomplishment. Arksey and O'Malley's guidelines were used and four databases were searched to identify studies discussing occupation-based interventions involving spousal caregivers and persons living with dementia in the community that addressed at least one of three domains of positive aspects of caregiving identified in our conceptualization.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic condition that is responsible for various long-term complications. Cognitive impairment is one of the most common complications, but the underlying mechanisms are still undetermined. The autonomic imbalance is a major cause for CVS morbidity in T2DM which could also potentially affect cognition.

Postoperative Immobilization Period for Pediatric Supracondylar Fractures: The Shorter the Better?

Background: There are now recognized standards of care published by the British and American Orthopaedic Associations which detail key areas of evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of children with displaced supracondylar humerus fractures. Although many aspects of treatment are covered in these recommendations, both the American and British Orthopaedic Associations do not recommend the exact duration of immobilization postoperatively.

Methods: This study retrospectively compared outcomes of operatively managed supracondylar fractures immobilized postoperatively for short immobilization (SI) defined as 28 days or less, with long immobilization (LI) defined as more than 28 days.

Currently, a considerable number of older adults do not actively participate in developing their own care plans; prior research has indicated several benefits of patient engagement in this process. Thus, we conducted a mixed methods study that examined the prevalence of rehabilitation goals and identified these for 305 community dwelling older adults referred to a frailty intervention clinic utilizing Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) between 2014 and 2018.

Objectives: Lenalidomide (LEN) is used to treat multiple myeloma (MM) and shows synergy with KappaMab (KM), a chimeric antibody specific for Kappa Myeloma antigen, an antigen exclusively expressed on the surface of kappa-restricted MM cells. Lenalidomide, dexamethasone (DEX) and KM control MM multiple immunomodulatory mechanisms; however, there are several additional effects of the drug combination on immune cells. Lenalidomide can increase T cell and NKT cell cytotoxicity and dendritic cell (DC) activation .
