We present the first global reassessment of 1,199 species in Class Chondrichthyes-sharks, rays, and chimeras. A fundamental understanding of the impact of petrochemicals and other stressors on marine biodiversity is critical for effective management, restoration, recovery, and mitigation initiatives. As species-specific information on levels of petrochemical exposure and toxicological response are lacking for the majority of marine species, a trait-based assessment to rank species vulnerabilities to petrochemical activities in the Gulf of Mexico can provide a more comprehensive and effective means to prioritize species, habitats, and ecosystems for improved management, restoration and recovery. To initiate and standardize this process, we developed a trait-based framework, applicable to a wide range of vertebrate and invertebrate species, that can be used to rank relative population vulnerabilities of species to petrochemical activities in the Gulf of Mexico.

A novel strategy employing cyclohexyl spectator ligands in Stille cross-coupling reactions has been developed as a general solution to the long-standing challenge of conducting stereospecific cross-coupling reactions at nitrogen-containing stereocenters. This method enables direct access to enantioenriched products that are difficult (or impossible) to obtain via alternative preparative methods. Selective and predictable transfer of a single secondary alkyl unit can be achieved under reaction conditions that exploit subtle electronic differences between activated and unactivated alkyl units.

We report the preparation of enantioenriched secondary alkylcarbastannatranes via a stereoinvertive S2 reaction of enantioenriched alkyl mesylates and carbastannatranyl anion equivalents. Using this process, enantioenriched secondary alcohols may be converted into highly enantioenriched alkylcarbastannatranes, which are useful in stereospecific cross-coupling reactions.

A recent phase I-II, open-label trial of ProSavin, a lentiviral vector delivering the key enzymes in the dopamine biosynthetic pathway to non-dopaminergic striatal neurons, demonstrated safety and improved motor function in parkinsonian patients. However, the magnitude of the effect suggested that optimal levels of dopamine replacement may not have been achieved. OXB-102, a lentiviral vector with an optimized expression cassette for dopamine biosynthesis, has been shown to achieve a significantly higher dopamine yield than ProSavin.

We report the use of isolable primary and secondary alkylcarbastannatrane nucleophiles in site-specific fluorination reactions. These reactions occur without the need for transition metal catalysis or in situ activation of the nucleophile. We report the development of a Pd-catalyzed process for the cross coupling of unactivated primary, secondary, and tertiary alkylcarbastannatrane nucleophiles with acyl electrophiles. Reactions involving optically active alkylcarbastannatranes occur with exceptional stereofidelity and with net retention of absolute configuration. Because the stereochemistry of the resulting products is entirely reagent-controlled, this process may be viewed as a general, alternative approach to the preparation of products typically accessed via asymmetric enolate methodologies.
