Pharmacological attenuation of mTOR presents a promising route for delay of age-related disease. Here we show that treatment of Drosophila with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin extends lifespan in females, but not in males. Female-specific, age-related gut pathology is markedly slowed by rapamycin treatment, mediated by increased autophagy.

Article Synopsis
  • Reduced activity of the insulin/IGF signaling network enhances health during aging across various species through specific mechanisms in different tissues.
  • Researchers identified significant changes in over 3600 transcripts and 3700 proteins related to aging by profiling long-lived mutants, particularly noting post-transcriptional regulation in the fat body.
  • Key findings included a decrease in age-related DNA damage and improved protein expression related to metabolism, suggesting these processes may help counteract aging declines in other organisms.
