Objective: Several studies have reported a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in orthopedic patients. The purpose of this prospective observational study was to report on the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in patients scheduled for elective primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and its associated risk factors.
Methods: In this monocentric cohort study, 25(OH) vitamin D serum levels were measured in 687 consecutive patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) over a period of twelve months.
Introduction: The aim of this article is to summarize, compare, and assess possible association in individuals with or without rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for periodontitis.
Evidence Acquisition: Three study repositories were searched for quantitative studies examining the relationship between periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis between 2000 and December 2022. Quality was evaluated using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS).
Background: Rapidly destructive osteoarthritis (RDO) of the hip joint is characterised by the rapid destruction of the femoral head with or without acetabular involvement. There has been increasing interest in this disease over the past years; however, the entity is still poorly understood, and its pathophysiology remains unknown. Yet, there is ample evidence today that increased bone metabolism might play a role in the onset and progression of the disease.

Obesity has been shown to be a significant parameter influencing cup positioning in DAA-THR. It was the intention of this retrospective study to examine how obesity would influence the restoration of native hip biomechanical parameters during DAA-THR.

In the case of a severe mismatch between the anatomy of the proximal femur and the geometry of the stem, the use of custom-made stems might become necessary. The goal of this study was to investigate the precision of the implantation of custom-made stems of one manufacturer (CTX stem, AQ Implants) and to determine risk factors for malpositioning.

Purpose: The present study of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) describes an intra-operative method that determines the direction and quantifies the magnitude of deviation of the distal and the posterior medial and lateral (DM, PM, DL, and PL) condyle of the femoral component relative to the pre-arthritic femoral articular surface. For each femoral condyle, the deviations were categorized, and an analysis determined which had better or worse Forgotten Joint Score (FJS), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), and WOMAC scores at 1-year follow-up.
Methods: Four academic arthroplasty surgeons supervised a cemented primary CR TKA (Triathlon, Stryker) on 120 consecutive patients.
In March 2020, Germany imposed a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19, prompting questions about the impact on the incidence of common fractures. This study examined 15 fracture types in pre-outbreak (2010-2019) and post-outbreak (2020-2021) periods, using data categorized by age (18-64 years, >65 years) and sex (male, female). Linear regression assessed annual growth rates, and mean fracture numbers were compared across periods for significant differences.

Research barriers stem from key federal policies, including strict drug scheduling of cannabis, which comprehensively hinder the ability to conduct cannabis research, affecting state markets, evidence-based regulation, and scientific gains that could more effectively shape policy moving forward. The Cannabis Regulators Association (CANNRA) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that convenes and supports government agencies to facilitate information exchange and learning from existing cannabis regulations across US states and territories and other governmental jurisdictions.

Functional knee phenotypes were introduced in 2019 and consist of limb, femoral, and tibial phenotypes. The hypothesis of this study was that mechanically aligned (MA) TKA changes preoperative functional phenotypes, which decreases the 1-year Forgotten Joint (FJS) and Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and increases the 1-year WOMAC.

In spite of this, they have been significantly overlooked for a long time and the knowledge on solvophobicity-driven mesoscale structures (SDMSs) is rather limited. Here, we follow up on our previous work on mesoscale solubility [Rak, D.

Because IR is expensive and should therefore be justified, this study determined the difference in knee function one year after TKA in patients treated with IR or outpatient rehabilitation, fast-track rehabilitation (FTR) in particular, which also entails a reduced hospital length of stay. A total of 205 patients were included in this multi-center prospective cohort study.

In this work, we prepare columns and beams through a layer-by-layer deposition of granular matter and loops of fiber strings, and characterize their mechanical properties. The loops cause the grains to jam, and the inter-grain contact leads to a Hertzian-like constitutive response.

Recently, there has been growing evidence surrounding the research based on extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially small EVs (sEVs)/exosomes derived from MSCs. EVs/exosomes can be secreted by almost all cell types and various types of EVs show multiple functions.

Because the average age of patients receiving a TKA is decreasing the possible need for multiple revisions might increase as well. Despite efforts to minimize bone and soft tissue damage, the resulting bone and soft-tissue loss increases with each revision and will make the use of megaprostheses indispensable in the future.

Indications: Primary and secondary osteoarthritis of the hip due to developmental dysplasia, femoroacetabular impingement, femoral head necrosis or trauma sequelae.
Contraindications: Severe osteoporosis, active infection, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) > III, large metaphyseal bone defects, severe metaphyseal deformities, Dorr type C femur.
Unlabelled: There is limited understanding of how asfotase alfa affects mineral metabolism and bone turnover in adults with pediatric-onset hypophosphatasia. This study showed that adults with hypophosphatasia treated with asfotase alfa experienced significant changes in biochemical markers of bone and mineral metabolism, possibly reflecting enhanced bone remodeling of previously osteomalacic bone.
Introduction: Hypophosphatasia (HPP), due to a tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) deficiency, can cause impaired bone mineralization and turnover.
Sarcopenia and malnutrition are important determinants of increased fracture risk in osteoporosis. SARC-F and MNA-SF are well-established questionnaires for identifying patients at risk for these conditions. We sought to evaluate the feasibility and potential added benefit of such assessments as well as the actual prevalence of these conditions in osteoporosis patients.

They firmly conclude that these procedures result in stable bulk nanobubbles. However, a number of previous works documented that the nanoentities observed in water upon such procedures are not nanobubbles.

Unlabelled: In adult hypophosphatasia (HPP) patients, elevated lumbar spine dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) values are associated with markers of disease severity and disease-specific fracture risk while femoral bone mineral density (BMD), being largely unaffected by the disease severity, may still be useful to monitor other causes of increased fracture risk due to low BMD.
Introduction: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder due to deficient activity of the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP). Clinical manifestation in adult HPP patients is manifold including an increased risk for fractures, but data regarding clinical significance of DXA measurement and associations with fracture risk and disease severity is scarce.
Background: Parallel to the increase in revision hip procedures surgeons face more and more complex anatomical challenges with pelvic discontinuity (PD) being one of the worst-case scenarios. Here we report on our clinical results using an asymmetric acetabular component for the treatment of PD. The implant is armed in a monoblock fashion with an extramedullary iliac flange and provides the possibility to augment it with an intramedullary iliac press-fit stem.

A drawback of studies on bulk nanobubbles is the absence of direct proof that the nano-objects reported are really nanobubbles. The aim of our work was to provide such a proof or disproof. We focused on two effects (processes) commonly considered in research on nanobubbles: ultrasonic cavitation and addition of organic compounds to water, which could create in principle a barrier at the gas/water interface contributing to the stability of nanobubbles.
