Application of Vilsmeier conditions to 4-hydroxyquinaldines gives 4-chloro-3-formyl-2-(2-hydroxyethene-1-yl)-quinolines as an intermediate. The latter is utilized to prepare diazepino quinolines on treatment with phenylhydrazine hydrochloride.
