Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers conducted a Phase III clinical trial to compare the immunogenicity and safety of two tetravalent inactivated influenza vaccines in healthy children aged 6-35 months.
  • * Both vaccines proved to be similarly effective and safe, with high seroprotection rates and comparable adverse events, indicating that the test vaccine Vaxiflu-4 is a viable alternative to the reference vaccine Fluarix Tetra.

Background: Enteric infections are hypothesized to be associated with intussusception in children. A small increase in intussusception following rotavirus vaccination has been seen in some settings. We conducted post-marketing surveillance for intussusception following rotavirus vaccine, Rotavac introduction in India and evaluated association of intussusception with enteric pathogens.

In April 2016, an indigenous monovalent rotavirus vaccine (Rotavac) was introduced to the National Immunization Program in India. Hospital-based surveillance for acute gastroenteritis was conducted in five sentinel sites from 2012 to 2020 to monitor the vaccine impact on various genotypes and the reduction in rotavirus positivity at each site. Stool samples collected from children under 5 years of age hospitalized with diarrhea were tested for group A rotavirus using a commercial enzyme immunoassay, and rotavirus strains were characterized by RT-PCR.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on understanding intussusception in children under 2 years old after the introduction of the Rotavac rotavirus vaccine in Odisha, from February 2016 to June 2019.
  • It involved collecting data on symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for 120 children, with a median age of 7 months, highlighting common signs like abdominal distention and blood in the stool.
  • The findings revealed that most cases were treatable through hydrostatic/pneumatic reduction if identified within 48 hours, while surgeries were often necessary for those diagnosed later, particularly in a government healthcare setting.

Objective: To report rotavirus-associated AGE (AGE) profile of admitted children among vaccine-introduced areas in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Methods: This study was conducted between 2016 and 2019 at the Capital Hospital, Jagannath hospital and Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital. All AGE patients below five years old, hospitalized in the study facilities were enrolled.

Background: A three-dose, oral rotavirus vaccine (Rotavac) was introduced in the universal immunization program in India in 2016. A prelicensure trial involving 6799 infants was not large enough to detect a small increased risk of intussusception. Postmarketing surveillance data would be useful in assessing whether the risk of intussusception would be similar to the risk seen with different rotavirus vaccines used in other countries.

Background: A liquid Pentavalent (DTwP-Hb-Hib) combination vaccine, developed by Human Biologicals Institute, underwent a Phase III clinical study in India. In this randomized, single blind, non-inferiority study, the immunogenicity and safety of this Investigational vaccine was compared with Pentavac SD® vaccine in 6-8 weeks old healthy infants.

Methods: A total of 405 healthy infants aged 6-8 weeks old were randomized in 2:1 ratio to receive three doses of either the Investigational liquid Pentavalent (DTwP-Hb-Hib) combination vaccine or Pentavac SD® vaccine at four to six weeks interval.

Orogastric tube (OGT) procedures are done in 20% of newborn unit cases. This study was contemplated to work out a formula to predict OGT length in terms of femur length in neonates and its agreement to existing standards. In this observational study, OGT length was estimated using NEMU (nose-ear-mid umbilicus) in 53 consecutive newborns.
