Retinal pericytes (PCs) are contractile microvascular smooth muscle cells that wrap around the endothelial cells (ECs) maintaining intact retinal vasculature (RV) with a 1:1 ratio. Microvascular complications like diabetic retinopathy (DR) due to chronic diabetes causes apoptotic loss of PCs followed by diminished vessel stability, EC apoptosis, and ischemia, leading to retinal angiogenesis, and eventually severe vision loss. This study aimed to analyze the proteins in PCs isolated from the RV of diabetic human donor eyes and compare them with remaining mixed population (MP) of retinal vascular cells.

Diabetic Retinopathy is prevalent among patients with uncontrolled hyperglycemia resulting in vision loss. Despite numerous challenges to create a link among these conditions, the characterization of pathological neovascularization causing retinal damage due to the prognosis of early non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy to late proliferative diabetic retinopathy needs deep understanding. In this study, meta-analysis-based integration of gene expression datasets for the fibrovascular membrane of PDR and neural retina of NPDR were compared, to investigate the differentially expressed genes involved in retinal angiogenesis.

Aldose reductase (ALR2) activation in the polyol pathway has been implicated as the primary mechanism for the progression of diabetic retinopathy. Most of the aldose reductase inhibitors (ARIs), used for the treatment of diabetic complications, were withdrawn due to ineffective treatment and adverse side effects caused by nonspecificity. Epalrestat, a carboxylic acid inhibitor, is the only ARI used for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, though associated with minor side effects to 8% of the treated population.

Pericytes (PC) are microvascular mural cells that make specific cell-to-cell contacts with the endothelial cells (EC). These cells are obligatory constituents of the microvessels including the retinal vasculature and they serve as regulators of vascular development, stabilization, maturation and remodeling. During early stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR), apoptotic loss of PC surrounding the retinal vasculature occurs.

Purpose: Aldose reductase (ALR), the first and rate-limiting enzyme involved in polyol pathway plays a central role in diabetes and its related complications, including diabetic retinopathy (DR). Inhibition of ALR may also be an ideal target for reducing the deleterious effects of DR. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the protective effect of epalrestat (EPL), ALR inhibitor on glucose-induced toxicity in ARPE-19 cells.

Aim: Nimesulide, a preferential COX-2 inhibitor has 20 times more selectivity towards COX-2 than that of COX-1. COX-2 selective inhibitors cause frequent nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity following their usage. This proposes a physiological role of COX-2 in kidney and liver.

Introduction: The lingual, inferior alveolar and auriculotemporal nerves, being branches of the posterior division of the mandibular nerve, mainly innervate the mandibular teeth and all the major salivary glands. Anomalous communications among these branches are widely reported due to their significance to various treatment procedures undertaken in the region. This study was performed as detailed exploration of the functional perspectives of such communicating branches would further enhance the scope of these procedures.
