Reconstruction of the historic time course of blood-borne virus contamination of clotting factor concentrates, 1974-1992.

Factor VIII and IX clotting factor concentrates manufactured from pooled plasma have been identified as potent sources of virus infection in persons with hemophilia (PWHs) in the 1970s and 1980s. To investigate the range and diversity of viruses over this period, we analysed 24 clotting factor concentrates for several blood-borne viruses. Nucleic acid was extracted from 14 commercially produced clotting factors and 10 from nonremunerated donors, preserved in lyophilized form (expiry dates: 1974-1992).

Recent advances in B-RAF inhibitors as anticancer agents.

The significance of B-RAF in the promotion of cell proliferation and motility was explored by the researchers in the past. However, in 2002, several researchers found that mutation in B-RAF leads to cancer. Extensive research on B-RAF mutations suggested B-RAF V600E mutation as a critical predictive, prognostic and diagnostic biomarker in numerous cancers such as melanoma, thyroid, and colorectal cancers.

Modeling of dynamical systems through deep learning.

This review presents a modern perspective on dynamical systems in the context of current goals and open challenges. In particular, our review focuses on the key challenges of discovering dynamics from data and finding data-driven representations that make nonlinear systems amenable to linear analysis. We explore various challenges in modern dynamical systems, along with emerging techniques in data science and machine learning to tackle them.

An objective methodology capturing online commodity marketing and other harms.

Increasingly life is lived online, yet little is known about the actual nature and extent of online content that people view due to the difficulty of recording real time exposure. This includes people's exposure to harmful commodity marketing. This study aimed to develop a methodology to assess the nature and extent of exposure to, and engagement with, unhealthy commodity marketing and other public health harms online, particularly children's exposure.

Clinical Profile of Elderly Patients (Over 90 Years) with Type 2 Diabetes Seen at a Diabetes Center in South India.

The current life expectancy in India is <70 years. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is known to reduce life expectancy by 6-8 years. Hence elderly people with T2DM in India would be rare.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Postpartum Follow-Up Testing: Challenges and Solutions.

One in every 4 pregnancies is affected by hyperglycemia, of which 90% is gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Women with GDM are at a high risk of developing both short- and long-term complications. Various studies have shown the heightened risk of type 2 diabetes among women with GDM.

Drug resistance to chemotherapeutic agents paved the way to develop novel synthetic molecules which are active on MDR cancer cell lines. Regio-isomeric imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine analogues were synthesized and evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against a range of cancer cell lines. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies of the imidazopyridine analogues are also described.

Extremely low frequency magnetic fields induce oxidative stress in rat brain.

The present investigation was conducted to understand the influence of long-term exposure of rats to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF), focusing on oxidative stress (OS) on different regions of rat's brain. Male Wistar rats (21-day-old) were exposed to ELF-MF (50 Hz; 50 and 100 µT) for 90 days continuously; hippocampal, cerebellar and cortical regions from rats were analyzed for (i) reactive oxygen species (ROS), (ii) metabolites indicative of OS and (iii) antioxidant enzymes. In comparison to control group rats, the rats that were continuously exposed to ELF-MF caused OS and altered glutathione (GSH/GSSG) levels in dose-dependent manner in all the regions of the brain.

Inverse correlation of intracellular calcium and cyclic AMP levels in renal cell carcinoma.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common renal tumour in adults. Altered levels of secondary messengers, that is, intracellular calcium and cyclic AMP (cAMP), have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various malignancies. In the present study, we measured levels of intracellular calcium and cAMP in RCC.

Preparation and evaluation of orodispersible tablets of pheniramine maleate by effervescent method.

Pre-operative forced-air warming as a method of anxiolysis.

We tested the hypothesis that pre-operative forced-air warming is as effective for anxiolysis as intravenous midazolam, using a blinded, placebo controlled factorial design. One hundred and twenty patients were randomly assigned to cotton blanket and saline injection (n = 30), forced-air warmer and saline injection (n = 30), midazolam 30 microg x kg(-1) and cotton blanket (n = 30), and forced-air warmer and midazolam 30 microg x kg(-1) (n = 30). Patients completed visual analogue scales for anxiety and thermal comfort, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, at baseline and after 20 min.

Fracture of an epidural catheter inserted for labour analgesia.

A primiparous 28-year-old woman undergoing augmentation of labour requested epidural analgesia. During the apparently uneventful insertion, the catheter snapped and a fragment was retained in her back. The management options for labour analgesia, the optimal methods of locating the retained fragment and the indications for surgical removal are discussed.

An adenovirus prime/plasmid boost strategy for induction of equipotent immune responses to two dengue virus serotypes.

Background: Dengue is a public health problem of global significance for which there is neither an effective antiviral therapy nor a preventive vaccine. It is a mosquito-borne viral disease, caused by dengue (DEN) viruses, which are members of the Flaviviridae family. There are four closely related serotypes, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4, each of which is capable of causing disease.

Upregulation of Slc39a10 gene expression in response to thyroid hormones in intestine and kidney.

A novel zinc transporter has been purified and cloned from rat renal brush border membrane. This transporter was designated as Zip10 encoded by Slc39a10 gene and characterized as zinc importer. Present study documents the impact of thyroid hormones on the expression of Zip10 encoded by Slc39a10 gene in rat model of hypo and hyperthyroidism.

Influence of extremely low frequency magnetic fields on Ca2+ signaling and NMDA receptor functions in rat hippocampus.

Extremely low frequency (ELF<300Hz) electromagnetic fields affect several neuronal activities including memory. Because ELF magnetic fields cause altered Ca(2+) homeostasis in neural tissues, we examined their influence on Ca(2+) signaling enzymes in hippocampus and related them with NMDA receptor functions. Hippocampal regions were obtained from brains of 21-day-old rats that were exposed for 90 days to 50Hz magnetic fields at 50 and 100 microT intensities.

Photodynamic therapy of high grade glioma - long term survival.

Haemetaporphyrin derivative (HpD) mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been investigated as an adjuvant treatment for cerebral glioma. This study records the survival of patients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital with residences in the State of Victoria, utilizing the Victorian Cancer Registry database for patients treated with adjuvant PDT following surgical resection of the tumour. For primary (newly diagnosed) tumours, median survival from initial diagnosis was 76.

Injectable silicone biomaterial for fecal incontinence caused by internal anal sphincter dysfunction is effective.

Purpose: Fecal incontinence caused by a weak or disrupted internal anal sphincter is common but there has been no effective treatment. This prospective study evaluates the medium-term clinical effects of an injectable silicone biomaterial, PTP (Bioplastique), used to augment the internal anal sphincter.

Method: Eighty-two patients (64 females; median age, 66 years) with severe fecal incontinence and a low anal resting pressure caused by internal anal sphincter dysfunction (defect, n = 11; intact, n = 71) were randomized to PTP injection into intersphincteric space and internal anal sphincter with (Group A, n = 42) or without (Group B, n = 40) guidance by endoanal ultrasound.

Photodynamic therapy of brain tumours: evaluation of porphyrin uptake versus clinical outcome.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the level of the photosensitizer haematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) uptake measured in tissue samples taken from brain tumour patients was associated with survival post-treatment with photodynamic therapy (PDT). The mean HpD uptake in tumour tissue was significantly higher in glioblastoma multiforme than anaplastic astrocytoma. Recurrent tumours had a higher mean uptake compared to primary tumours, which was evident in all grades of tumour.

Biological effects of power frequency magnetic fields: Neurochemical and toxicological changes in developing chick embryos.

BACKGROUND: There are several reports that indicate a linkage between exposure to power frequency (50 - 60 Hz) magnetic fields with abnormalities in the early embryonic development of the chicken. The present study was designed to understand whether power frequency electromagnetic fields could act as an environmental insult and invoke any neurochemical or toxicological changes in developing chick embryo model. METHODS: Fertilized chicken eggs were subjected to continuous exposure to magnetic fields (50 Hz) of varying intensities (5, 50 or 100 microT) for a period of up to 15 days.

A retrospective study of death among patients treated for tuberculosis in the Klang Chest Clinic for the year 1999.

A retrospective epidemiological study was done on 41 deaths among patients treated for TB in the Klang Chest Clinic for the year 1999. The findings revealed a male preponderance of TB deaths with Indians having the highest case fatality rate (8.6%).

Clomipramine in resistant obsessive compulsive disorder.

Twelve subjects with a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who had not shown response to amitryptiline and imipramine/behaviour therapy underwent a cross over double blind trial with clomipramine and nortryptiline. Subjects who had earlier not shown response to the other drugs did not show response to clomipramine. The implications of these findings for clinical management are discussed.

Electroconvulsive Therapy in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

An open trial of electroconvulsive therapy was conducted in nine subjects who met DSM-III criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder. There was an initial reduction in symptomatology that lasted from 1 to 4 months. Subjects who had less obsessive-compulsive (anankastic) personality traits responded better.
