We collected data on the epidemiology of this condition in our institution for the past 18 years (January 1, 1991-December 31, 2008). There has been a marked decrease in the incidence of active infection since the 1990s.

Methods: We reviewed the charts of 57 infants delivered at 23 and 24 weeks' gestation. Fetal heart rate tracings were evaluated following the NICHD 2008 criteria, using the acceleration height of 10 bpm and duration of 10 s.

The incidence of fungal endocarditis in premature infants is on the rise, reported in the last decade secondary to use of central venous lines, the frequent use of broad spectrum antibiotics and neonatal surgical interventions. Central line related thrombosis is a significant risk factor for persistent fungemia and end organ complications including endocarditis. We present a fatal case of progressive thrombosis of the inferior vena cava and right atrial mycetoma in a premature infant with candidemia who underwent ileostomy for bowel perforation.

Therefore, infants with this type of isolated defects are potential candidates for surgical correction. We present three cases of tracheal agenesis (Floyd's type III) with no other major abnormalities and reviewed the literature.

Over the past decade, New York State has moved from a policy of blind newborn screening for seroprevalence data to mandatory HIV testing as part of the statewide Newborn Screening (NBS) Program. A new statewide program of expedited HIV testing (48-hr turnaround results) of pregnant women and newborns (whose HIV status is unknown at the time of delivery) began in the summer of 1999.
