Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defenses vary over a 24-hour period in renal stone patients and healthy volunteers, focusing on their circadian rhythms.
  • Both groups were monitored under similar conditions, and blood samples were taken every six hours to measure levels of plasma lipid peroxides (MDA) and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, GPx, GR, CAT).
  • Results showed that renal stone patients had higher levels of MDA and lower levels of antioxidants compared to healthy subjects, indicating a significant circadian variation that may influence prevention and treatment strategies for kidney stones.

Circadian periodicity of plasma lipid peroxides and serum ascorbic acid and uric acid levels were studied in one hundred renal stone formers (55 women and 45 men; age 20-60 years) and 50 clinically healthy volunteers (21 women and 29 men; age 21-45 years) with diurnal activity from 06:00 to 22:00 and nocturnal rest. A marked circadian variation was demonstrated by population-mean-cosinor for all studied variables in stone formers and healthy subjects. By comparison to the healthy controls, parameter tests indicate that the stone formers had a higher MESOR (±SE) of MDA (2.

The circadian time structure of serum 25 (OH) vitamin D (25-OHD), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) may prove to be helpful in prevention, efficacy and management of diabetes mellitus. Ten newly diagnosed patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (6 men and 4 women), 30-65 years of age, and 10 age-matched clinically healthy volunteers (7 men and 3 women) were synchronized for one week with diurnal activity from about 06:00 to about 22:00 and nocturnal rest. Breakfast was served around 08:00, lunch around 13:30 and dinner around 20:00.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, or histiocytic necrotising lymphadenopathy of unknown aetiology, is a rare, benign and self-limiting cause of lymphadenopathy often involving the cervical nodes, and rarely presenting with mesenteric lymphadenopathy. We present a 26-year-old Caucasian male, who presented with right iliac fossa pain and low grade pyrexia, mimicking acute appendicitis. He underwent a laparatomy and an extended right hemi-colectomy for a caecal mass.

Genitourinary tuberculosis is a disease of the genitourinary system which includes the entire urinary tract and reproductive system. Genital tuberculosis is an important cause of female infertility, especially in developing nations like India. In the present study, a total of 257 clinical specimens comprising of endometrial biopsy (109), endometrial curetting (42), menstrual blood (8), semen (17), placenta (11) and urine (70) were collected from patients and subjected for PCR, Culture and AFB detection.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that has been linked to the human leukocyte antigen class I allele HLA-B27. More than 90 % of patients with ankylosing spondylitis possess the HLA-B27 allele, but only 1 % of people with HLA-B27 develop the disease. Ankylosing spondylitis predominately affects young males.

The present study was carried out to explore the anti-diabetic, anti-dyslipoproteinemic and anti-oxidant activities of Anthocephalus indicus root extract in alloxan-induced (150 mg/kg body wt.) diabetic rats. A marked increase in plasma levels of glucose and lipid peroxides accompanied with an elevation in the lipids and apoprotein levels of serum very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) following decrease in lipid and protein constituents of high density lipoprotein (HDL) were observed.

Introduction: The effect of pelvic radiotherapy on anorectal function is not clearly documented and is investigated in this prospective study.

Methods: Thirty-one males (median age, 70 years) with carcinoma of the prostate (n = 28) and bladder (n = 3) completed proctitis/incontinence symptom score questionnaires and anorectal physiology studies before and six weeks after pelvic radiotherapy. At six months after completion of radiotherapy, 25 of these patients were studied again.
