Direct methane to methanol conversion is a dream reaction in industrial chemistry, which takes inspiration from the biological methanol production catalysed by methane monooxygenase enzymes (MMOs). Over the years, extensive studies have been conducted on this topic by bioengineering the MMOs, and tailoring methods to isolate the MMOs in the active form. Similarly, remarkable achievements have been noted in other methane activation strategies such as the use of heterogeneous catalysts or molecular catalysts.

Objectives: The prevalence of low Vitamin D levels (<30 nmol/L) is about 15.7% globally. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in elderly patients with fragility fractures of the hip by estimating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and to assess whether low vitamin D levels at the time of admission affect functional outcomes at 3 months and mortality at 28 days and 1 year.

Article Synopsis
  • - Fracture-dislocation of the ankle is a common injury that often includes damage to the syndesmosis, and while CT and MRI are better for diagnosing these injuries, treatment usually involves either screws or a suture button for stabilization.
  • - Dynamic stabilization with a suture button is preferred because it doesn’t require a second surgery to remove screws, but can lead to issues in patients with inflammatory conditions, potentially causing further complications like tendon degeneration.
  • - A case of a 63-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis illustrates these challenges; after surgery for her ankle injury, she experienced a plano-valgus deformity due to migration of the suture button and arthritis in the syndesmosis joint.

The field of environmental and water remediation faces a significant challenge in removing organic dyes from wastewater, particularly Rhodamine B (RhB), a stubborn dye used in various industries. Traditional treatment methods struggle with its resistance to decomposition, posing risks to water quality, human health, and aquatic life. This study demonstrates a novel approach to enhance photocatalytic efficiency for RhB degradation by constructing a MOF-5/g-CN composite through a facile mechanical grinding method, which is unprecedented.

Selective functionalisation of hydrocarbons using transition metal complexes has evoked significant research interest in industrial chemistry. However, selective oxidation of unactivated aliphatic C-H bonds is challenging because of the high bond dissociation energies. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterisation and catalytic activity of nickel(ii) complexes ([Ni(L1-L3)(OH)](ClO) (1-3)) of monoamidate tetradentate ligands [L1: 2-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)--phenylacetamide, L2: 2-(bis(2-pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)--(naphthalen-1-yl)acetamide, L3: -benzyl-2-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)acetamide] in selective oxidation of cycloalkanes using -CPBA as the oxidant.

After the discovery of DNA during the mid-20 century, a multitude of novel methodologies have surfaced which exploit DNA for its various properties. One such recently developed application of DNA is as a template in metal nanocluster formation. In the early years of the new millennium, a group of researchers found that DNA can be adopted as a template for the binding of metal nanoparticles that ultimately form nanoclusters.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by the loss of intellectual functions. The disorder is usually seen after the age of 60 years, and these elderly patients tend to experience a progressive decline in their cognitive and behavioural abilities.

Aim: The present study was carried out to assess the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in elderly patients suffering from AD as compared to subjects without the disease.

A stress-avulsion fracture of the inferior pole of the patella is rare. We report a case of a 65-year-old woman who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for a transverse fracture of the patella using cannulated screws inserted from the inferior pole of the patella. Subsequently, the patient developed an avulsion fracture of the inferior pole of the patella due to a stress riser from the prominent screw head.

Pneumomediastinum is a rare condition defined by the presence of air in the mediastinum. In the absence of traumatic injury, iatrogenic injury, or clear etiology, it is called spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM). Spontaneous pneumomediastinum most commonly occurs in younger individuals and has a self-limiting course with a good outcome.

  • - Freiberg's disease involves osteonecrosis of the lesser metatarsal heads, primarily seen in adolescent females, with rare cases occurring bilaterally.
  • - Treatment typically starts with conservative methods, but surgical options like excision and microfracture are available, though results can be unpredictable.
  • - This report highlights a unique case of a 17-year-old girl with bilateral Freiberg's disease successfully treated with Autologous Matrix-Induced Chondrogenesis (AMIC), leading to great radiological and functional improvements.

  • Acrylate polymers and cross-polymers (ACPs) are common in cosmetics, and a study by the BSCA and CTPA aimed to assess their potential for causing allergic reactions.
  • The study involved patch testing over 1300 patients for reactions to three specific ACPs, finding very few cases of irritant or doubtful reactions, with no confirmed allergies to one of the compounds tested.
  • The overall conclusion is that sensitization to these ACPs at the concentrations tested is rare, suggesting minimal risk of dermatitis in patients already sensitive to (meth)acrylates.

Stenosing tenosynovitis of the ankle with osseous bone formation following an open reduction and internal fixation of the ankle is a rare clinical condition. We report a case of adult-acquired flat foot following an open reduction and internal fixation of a bi-malleolar fracture due to tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction caused by stenosing tenosynovitis. This was managed by open excision of the bony tunnel and debridement, along with calcaneal osteotomy and distalization of the tendon, resulting in good functional outcomes.

The field of biomaterials is a continuously evolving interdisciplinary field encompassing biological sciences, materials sciences, chemical sciences, and physical sciences with a multitude of applications realized every year. However, different biomaterials developed for different applications have unique challenges in the form of biological barriers, and addressing these challenges simultaneously is also a challenge. Nevertheless, immense progress has been made through the development of novel materials with minimal adverse effects such as DNA nanostructures, specific synthesis strategies based on supramolecular chemistry, and modulating the shortcomings of existing biomaterials through effective functionalization techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of p120 catenin in the development and progression of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas (OSCC) by comparing its expression in OSCC tissues and adjacent apparently normal mucosa (ANMAOSCC).
  • Results showed that over 80% of OSCC cases expressed p120, while all ANMAOSCC samples maintained expression, highlighting a significant difference in the cellular localization of p120 between the two groups.
  • The atypical staining pattern of p120 in OSCC suggests a loss of cell adhesion and may serve as a potential biomarker for assessing the malignant potential of these tumors.

Introduction Post-operative anaemia in hip fracture patients has been associated with increased risk of blood transfusion, poorer functional outcomes, increased morbidity and mortality. Patients with persisting drop in haemoglobin after fractured neck of femur with no obvious source of blood loss are often referred for endoscopy to find the cause of anaemia. The reported incidence of perioperative acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding varies from 1 to 15%.

  • Buerger's disease (BD) is a serious condition that requires early diagnosis for effective treatment, but there’s no universally accepted method for diagnosing it due to varied criteria used by different vascular centers.
  • A recent Delphi Consensus Study highlighted the lack of consensus on BD diagnostic criteria, particularly beyond the requirement of a history of smoking, making it hard to compare patient outcomes globally.
  • The VAS-European Independent Foundation has proposed that a definitive BD diagnosis should include a history of smoking, typical angiographic and histopathological features, and suggests using a combination of major and minor criteria for suspected diagnoses, with validation studies currently in progress.
