Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Awareness and Prevention: A Cross-Sectional Study Among the Population of the Southern Region of Saudi Arabia.

Background: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a prevalent and preventable health issue globally. This study aims to evaluate the symptoms, knowledge, beliefs, and preventive practices regarding NIHL among the general population of the southern region of Saudi Arabia.

Materials & Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to July 2024, using a self-administered, validated electronic questionnaire distributed in Arabic via social media platforms.

Age-Related Trends of Thyroidectomies in Saudi Arabia: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

Understanding the relationship between aging and postoperative complications is critical because it may influence how the condition is managed. The safety of thyroidectomy in the older age group is debated in literature. All previous studies were conducted outside of the Middle East, and there is a scarcity of data in the literature describing the relationship between age and postoperative outcomes after thyroidectomy.

Studying the effectiveness of self-directed education in learning and teaching the otolaryngology module in an integrated-based curriculum.

Introduction: Self-learning is a learning process in which students harvest the enterprise, to express their learning goals, choose assets for learning, practice learning strategies, and assess the outcomes achieved. Many forms of self-learning were introduced in integrative medical curricula such as Team-based learning (TBL) and Problem-based learning (PBL). This study aims to evaluate self-learning in the otolaryngology module and determine the type of self-learning that students prefer and which of these types has a stronger impact on achieving the educational objectives of the module.

Referred otalgia in patients with thyroid cancer: Case series from Saudi Arabia.

Introduction And Importance: Referred Otalgia is very unlikely to be the first presentation of thyroid carcinoma, however, it is important to examine thyroid in cases of otalgia lacking any evidence of primary origin.

Case Presentation: We report five cases of thyroid carcinoma, variant types, presented by secondary otalgia in Al-Baha region, KSA followed by proper surgery and patient relief during the last eight years. Patients' ages ranged from 25 to 65 years old.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) in Thyroid Nodule Excision Cases.

Introduction: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for thyroid nodules has a high diagnostic accuracy, according to several studies worldwide. Patients who experienced preoperative FNAC had more optimal surgical treatment than others who did not perform FNAC. Therefore, achieving an accurate FNAC procedure appears to be an important tool for the proper management of thyroid nodules.

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a clinically significant disorder that requires attention from healthcare professionals. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, awareness, and attitude of primary healthcare physicians regarding OSA in Saudi Arabia.

Methodology: A cross-sectional observational study design was employed from January 18, 2023, to August 18, 2023, focusing on primary healthcare physicians practicing in the Al-Baha region of Saudi Arabia.

Self-Medication Practices Among the General Population in Al-Baha City, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background The practice of self-medication (SM) is the use of self-consuming medication without consulting healthcare which carries its own risks. SM patterns differ across populations and are influenced by several factors. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of SM practices in Al-Baha, Saudi Arabia, to identify the factors contributing to this practice and develop effective strategies to decrease its occurrence and associated risks.

A Rare Case of Recurrent Carcinoma Ex Basal Cell Adenoma of the Parotid Gland.

Basal cell adenoma is encountered in the salivary glands, particularly the parotid gland; however, malignant transformation is rare, and recurrence is much rarer. We report the case of a 60-year-old man who had experienced a slow-growing mass in the parotid gland, which was suspected to be pleomorphic adenoma. Radiological and cytological examination suggested an atypical lesion in the left parotid.

Assessment of the Current Knowledge and Practice of General Practitioners Towards Laryngopharyngeal Reflux in Saudi Arabia.

Background General practitioners (GPs) have a significant role in the diagnosis of patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Some published data revealed a lack of knowledge among GPs about the disease, consequently, this lack of knowledge impacted their performance. This survey aims to assess the current knowledge and practice of general practitioners regarding laryngopharyngeal reflux in Saudi Arabia.

Thyroid neoplasm in Makkah region, Saudi Arabia. A retrospective epidemiological study.

To improve our local data and demographics of thyroid neoplasm in Makkah region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and provide some basic statistics for future studies in our local community.  Methods: A record based retrospective epidemiological study was conducted and included 314 thyroid disease patients who were presented to our centers at Makkah region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between December 2009 and December 2019. Results: A descriptive statistical analysis was carried out.

Objectives: To evaluate the accuracy and e cacy of ne-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in diagnosing thyroid nodules, correlating it with the histopathological findings.

Methods: A retrospective evaluation of 314 patients was undertaken at a tertiary referral center of King Abdullah Medical City (KAMC), Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between 2010-2019. Patients who presented with thyroid swellings underwent ultrasonography and FNAC.

Perception of Pathology of Otolaryngology-Related Subjects: Students' Perspective in an Innovative Multidisciplinary Classroom.

Aim: Multidisciplinary, as a term, is used to define people from different scientific backgrounds working together, each drawing on their field of expertise. Some related terms are frequently used interchangeably, such as interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, but they are confusing and ambiguous. Introduction of a multidisciplinary teaching method in the early phases of medical curricula is insufficient for effective learning.

Transoral Endoscopic Coblation Tongue Base Surgery in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Resection versus Ablation.

Background: A new transoral tongue base surgical procedure for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is described. It is named "Robo-Cob" technique because it is similar to transoral robotic surgery (TORS) but it is performed by means of coblation technology in order to resect the tongue base in countries where TORS is not an available option for such benign conditions.

Methods: In this prospective, randomized, controlled trial, the new Robo-Cob technique was carried out in 25 adult OSA patients with confirmed tongue base hypertrophy at preoperative drug-induced sedation endoscopy.

Locally Advanced Oral Cavity Cancers: What Is The Optimal Care?

Patients with oral cavity cancers often present late to seek medical care. Surgery is usually the preferred upfront treatment. However, surgical resection cannot be achieved in many cases with advanced disease without major impact on patient's quality of life.

Cancerous Inhibitor of Protein Phosphatase 2A as a Molecular Marker for Aggressiveness and Survival in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Cancerous inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A (CIP2A) has been identified as one of the most commonly altered proteins in human cancers. It blocks the tumor-suppressive action of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) complex and enhances malignancy. Thirty-five patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity underwent surgical resection of the tumor.

Oncology research in Saudi Arabia over a 10-year period. A synopsis.

Objectives: To assess the quality and quantity of Saudi publications in oncology over a 10-year period.

Methods: A systematic PubMed search was conducted between January 2008 and December 2017 to retrieve all Saudi oncology publications. Data about the articles was collected.

Parathyroid hormone and serum calcium levels measurements as predictors of postoperative hypocalcemia in total thyroidectomy.

Background: The rules of quantitative measures such as parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in the first hours following total thyroidectomy have since been validated repeatedly. Such measures play an integral rule in identifying patients at significant risk for hypocalcaemia and have allowed for earlier supplementation of these patients with calcium with or without vitamin D.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 40 consecutive patients with well differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) who underwent total thyroidectomy without central neck dissection (CND) as an initial surgery and no comorbidity at King Abdulaziz Medical City (National Guard hospital), between July 2011 and July 2012.

Thyroid Langerhans cell histiocytosis and papillary thyroid carcinoma.

A 27-year-old female, married with two children, presented to our clinic with a 1-year history of thyroid swelling and pressure symptoms on lying backward and bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. The patient was a known case of panhypopituitarism for 5 years. Comprehensive patient evaluation including FNAC with papillary thyroid cancer result then she underwent total thyroidectomy and bilateral neck dissection and final histologic examination confirmed papillary thyroid carcinoma in the background of lymphocytic thyroiditis, associated with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH).
