Background: Meningococcal disease remains an important public health problem globally. We assessed the non-inferiority and the lot-to-lot consistency of a pentavalent meningococcal ACYWX conjugate vaccine (NmCV-5; Serum Institute of India, Pune, India) versus a quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-D) in healthy adults.

Methods: In this observer-blind, randomised, active-controlled, phase 2/3 study, healthy adults aged 18-85 years were recruited from nine hospitals across seven cities in India.

Objectives: Studies show that anxiety and depression are widespread across patients presenting to outpatient services for medical illnesses. We expect similar or even higher prevalence in patients with breast complaints owing to the relevance of breasts in terms of sexuality, identity and confidence. Thus, this study was proposed to estimate the prevalence and identify risk factors for being at risk for anxiety and depression in patients seeking breast services.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between magnesium (Mg) levels and ischaemic stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in India, addressing a gap in previous research.* -
  • A case-control design was used, enrolling 200 participants, of which 149 were analyzed after adjusting for factors; the results showed significantly lower serum Mg levels in stroke cases compared to controls.* -
  • It was found that a decrease in serum Mg concentration correlates with an increased risk of ischaemic stroke, prompting a call for more research on Mg supplementation for stroke management in T2DM patients.*

Introduction: The institutional ethics committees (IECs) raise queries following protocol reviews. The quality of these queries would be a useful metric to assess how well the IEC executes its fundamental role of protecting participants.

Methods: Queries received after the initial review and replies sent by a single research department were evaluated.

  • Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) is commonly used in alternative medicine to treat uncomplicated Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, and this study evaluated a standardized extract (AP-Bio®) for its effectiveness.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 200 mg or 400 mg of AP-Bio® or a placebo for seven days, with the primary focus being on the Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptom Survey (WURSS-21) score.
  • Results showed that both dosage groups had significantly lower WURSS-21 scores on Day 3 compared to placebo, indicating a positive effect of AP-Bio®, although some secondary outcomes did not show statistical significance due to limited sample size.

Standard practice for acetabular component placement in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is to medialise the acetabular component. Bone preservation techniques during primary THA are beneficial for possible future revisions. The goal of this study is to examine the effect of downsizing and minimising medialisation of the acetabular component on bone resection volume.

Objectives: In acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients the focus is on major conventional risk factors - CRF [diabetes, hypertension, elevated low-density cholesterol (LDL-C) and smoking] whereas others - specific metabolic risk factors - MRF [high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), body-mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and triglycerides, and HbA1c get less attention.

Methods: This is a prospective case-control observational study from 15 tertiary care hospitals in India. CRF and MRF in patients presenting with first incidence of ACS (n = 2153) were compared with matched controls (n = 1210).

  • Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a condition causing an urge to move the legs due to uncomfortable sensations, impacting sleep quality and long-term health in children and adolescents.
  • A study conducted among college students in Bengaluru, India, found that 8.36% had RLS, 36.67% experienced poor sleep quality, and 39.87% suffered from excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • Significant predictors for these conditions included factors like age, sleep habits, and gender, with overall prevalence rates higher than historical data from the same city.

  • Healthcare workers in India were given a specific hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) dosage regimen as a preventive measure against COVID-19, but there was a lack of comprehensive data on how this drug behaves in their population.* -
  • A multicentric study involved 121 participants providing multiple blood samples to analyze HCQ concentrations, using advanced lab techniques for accurate measurement and pharmacokinetic modeling.* -
  • The findings indicated that the existing dosage regimen resulted in drug levels below the effective threshold, leading to a recommendation for a new weight-based dosage to ensure sufficient HCQ concentrations.*

Background: CYP3A5 enzymes belong to the phase I Group of drug-metabolizing enzymes, which are involved in the metabolism of 50% of the drugs. Participants with CYP3A5 genotype: CYP3A5 *1/*1 are fast metabolizers of drugs and hence will require higher dosing. Whereas those with CYP3A5 * 3/*3 are poor metabolizers of drugs and will require a lower dose to achieve target drug concentration in the blood and those with CYP3A5 * 1/*3 have intermediate drug metabolizing activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how using sample-specific reference intervals (RIs) can reduce the number of participants excluded from clinical trials due to abnormal lab values, ultimately speeding up recruitment and lowering costs.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 601 participants and established new RIs for key laboratory parameters, noting significant differences in "out of range" (OOR) values when comparing new and old RIs.
  • Findings suggest that implementing these new, sample-specific RIs significantly decreases the proportion of OOR values, highlighting their importance in improving participant inclusion in clinical studies.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a complication arising from untreated end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It can invariably lead to osteoporosis and subsequently cause pathological neck of femur (NOF) fracture. Despite being young, osteosynthesis in neck of femur fractures of these patients often leads to nonunion and implant failure due to severely osteoporotic bone.
