Background: The Angio-invasive Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) producing strokes is a less explored entity. Our hospital, a stroke-ready one, had an opportunity to manage mucormycosis when it was identified as the nodal center for mucormycosis management. For these purposes, a cohort of 109 adult TBI patients was recruited within 6 h from the injury event. A hyperacute subcohort of 20 patients who had their blood collected within 2 h from injury was analyzed separately for early acute biomarker levels.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: The objective was to determine the accuracy of a new, rapid blood test combining measurements of both glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) for predicting acute traumatic intracranial injury (TII) on head CT scan after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
Methods: Analysis of banked venous plasma samples from subjects completing the Prospective Clinical Evaluation of Biomarkers of Traumatic Brain Injury (ALERT-TBI) trial, enrolled 2012-2014 at 22 investigational sites in the United States and Europe. All subjects were ≥18 years old, presented to an emergency department (ED) with a nonpenetrating head injury and Glasgow Coma Scale score (GCS) 9-15 (mild to moderate TBI), underwent head CT scanning as part of their clinical care, and had blood sampling within 12 h of injury.
Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) may aid in the evaluation of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objective of this analysis was to compare GFAP and UCH-L1 values measured using a handheld device compared with a core laboratory platform. We analyzed plasma samples from patients with TBI and healthy controls enrolled in the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in TBI (TRACK-TBI) cohort study.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: Linifanib, a potent and selective inhibitor of the tyrosine kinase activity of vascular endothelial growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor receptors, has clinical activity in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) both as monotherapy in the relapsed setting or with carboplatin and paclitaxel in the first-line setting. Though benefit was observed in unselected patient populations, identification of predictive biomarkers is critical for further development of this novel agent.
Materials And Methods: Data from 4 randomized studies in relapsed NSCLC with linifanib (n=116) or other treatments (n=125) were examined in an exploratory analysis to identify a biomarker profile predictive of favorable survival.
