Despite a growing number of studies, the role of pollinators as a selection agent for nectar traits remains unclear. Moreover, the lack of data from some biogeographic regions prohibits us from determining their general importance and global patterns. We analyzed nectar carbohydrate traits and determined the main pollinators of 66 plant species in the tropical forests of Mount Cameroon (tropical West Africa).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of ultraviolet (UV) reflectance in attracting pollinators, particularly in the montane grasslands of Mount Cameroon, focusing on how this visibility impacts flower visitors, primarily bees and flies.
  • It was found that completely removing UV reflectance significantly lowered bee visitation rates and altered their landing behavior, while partially removing UV did not have a significant effect.
  • The research underscores the importance of UV reflectance over its pattern for pollinators, suggesting that bees may rely on this feature to efficiently locate flowers in high-altitude grasslands where they are less frequent.
