Background: The movement toward competency-based education (CBE), endorsed by AACN, has highlighted the need for nursing programs to engage in curriculum revisions. Best practice Writing Across the Curriculum instructional strategies may play a key role in revising courses to meet CBE criteria.

Problem: Faculty may not feel prepared to modify or develop courses to meet the CBE standards detailed in the AACN 2021 Essentials and may not recognize how Writing Across the Curriculum strategies can be utilized to meet CBE requirements.

The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) is the most widely used self-report measure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is frequently modeled as having four correlated factors consistent with the DSM-5 symptom structure. Some researchers have argued that item order may influence factor structure. Although two studies have examined this, they were both based on DSM-IV criteria, and neither utilized a randomized design.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of a cognitive fitness training (CFT) program on the development of emotional intelligence and stress management skills in medical students during their 3rd year surgery clerkship.

Methods: MS3s (n = 80) were randomized into a training or control group. The training group received CFT during their clerkship, the control group received online access afterwards.

Introduction: Literature shows failure of the outpatient clinic (OC) pathway after emergency department (ED) ultrasound diagnosis of symptomatic cholelithiasis (SC). We hypothesized SC to be more prevalent on final surgical pathology (FSP) in patients who successfully completed OC pathway.

Methods: This retrospective single-institution chart review compared OC and ED patients with right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain and cholelithiasis whom underwent cholecystectomy.

Introduction: Blood supply to preputial flap drives outcomes of hypospadias repair. Unfortunately, we only have surgeon's subjective assessment to evaluate flap perfusion which may not be accurate. Indocyanine green (ICG) has been used in a multitude of surgeries for perfusion assessment, however, no standardized protocol has been described for use of ICG in hypospadias repairs.

Written exposure therapy (WET) is a brief, manualized trauma-focused treatment typically delivered in five individual weekly sessions. Given the brevity and effectiveness of WET, researchers have begun to focus on its delivery in a massed format. However, only one case study examining massed delivery has been published to date.

The PTSD Checklist for (PCL-5) and the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for (CAPS-5) are two of the most widely used and well-validated PTSD measures providing total and subscale scores that correspond with PTSD symptoms. However, there is little information about the utility of subscale scores above and beyond the total score for either measure. The current study compared the proposed four-factor model to a bifactor model across both measures using a sample of veterans ( = 1,240) presenting to a Veterans Affairs (VA) PTSD specialty clinic.

Objective: Current assessment of critical tissue in genitourinary reconstruction, including graft beds and tissue flaps, primarily relies upon qualitative visual and tactile assessment by experienced surgeons. Here we explore the feasibility of using intravenous indocyanine green (ICG) for semiquantitative assessment of perfusion in complex open urethral reconstruction.

Methods: A standardized protocol for intravenous use of ICG and near-infrared fluorescence was established.

Introduction: As a result of the nature of military service, veterans are a unique patient population with many special health considerations. For various reasons, measures are often not taken by clinicians to address such special considerations. This results in a healthcare disparity for veterans first described by Dr.

Objective: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and hazardous drinking often co-occur. One widely acknowledged explanation for this co-occurrence is the self-medication hypothesis. However, only one study to date has explicitly examined the extent to which drinking to cope with trauma-related symptoms, rather than drinking to cope with negative affect more broadly, accounts for this association.

A 33-yr-old female Western lowland gorilla () was diagnosed with a congenital umbilical hernia that was reducible and asymptomatic; change in the hernia was noted after parturition and concerns regarding increased risk of bowel incarceration developed. The hernia was successfully repaired with robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. A 5-mon-old male Western lowland gorilla presented with bilateral inguinal hernias that were repaired via elective laparoscopic repair.

Objective: Despite widespread use of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Checklist for -fifth edition (PCL-5) across various trauma-exposed populations, little is known about the psychometric properties of the instrument in certain ethnic minority groups with increased risk of trauma exposure, including Black veterans. To this end, the current study examined the internal consistency of the PCL-5, convergent validity using correlations between the PCL-5 and another measure of PTSD, and discriminant validity using correlations between the PCL-5 and other commonly occurring psychiatric symptoms, including depression as well as alcohol and substance misuse.

Method: The sample was composed of 327 Black veterans (84% male, = 51.

Background: Increased robotic surgery exposure during general surgery training occurs at many institutions without a formal education curriculum. Our study evaluates the current state of general surgery robotic training within programs represented by the Southwestern Surgical Congress (SWSC).

Methods: A web-based survey regarding robot-assisted surgery (RAS) and general surgery training was developed and sent to member institutions of the SWSC.

Introduction: Caregiver phone calls are an important part of caring for pediatric patients. At our institution, residents respond to after-hours caregiver calls. While it is critical for families to be able to reach us for urgent concerns, the ease of access has led to overutilization with many phone calls not meeting the urgent nature that is intended for these calls.

Background: The majority of final surgical pathology (FSP) from both emergency department (ED) and outpatient clinic (OC) patients is chronic cholecystitis. We aimed to differentiate these presentations and identify disparities associated with ED utilization and OC failure.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of single institution ED and OC cholecystectomies for cholelithiasis.

To conduct a secondary data analysis of how changes in smoking and drinking during pregnancy impact status of any breastfeeding and breastfeeding duration in a national cohort. A cross-sectional study was conducted using Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) data between 2009 and 2017 ( = 334,203). Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted on the status of any breastfeeding and breastfeeding duration.

Black Americans are at greater risk for more severe and enduring consequences of anxiety disorders than White Americans, highlighting the need to identify malleable risk and maintenance factors. The current study aimed to examine racial differences in anxiety sensitivity and anxiety sensitivity facets between Black and White veterans (N = 285; 58% Black, 77% Male; Mage = 43.51, SD = 11.

Despite their brevity, prior work indicates that computer-based interventions can substantially impact risk factors for psychopathology including anxiety sensitivity (AS), thwarted belongingness (TB), and perceived burdensomeness (PB). However, very few studies have assessed the long-term (> 1 year) effects of these interventions. The primary aim of the current study was to evaluate post-hoc, the long-term (3 year) durability of brief interventions targeting risk factors for anxiety and mood psychopathology using data from a pre-registered randomized clinical trial.

Traditional teaching suggests that prior pelvic operations, including prostatectomy, are a contraindication to laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Despite the growing use of robotic platforms in inguinal hernia repair, there are few studies describing robotic-assisted inguinal hernia repairs (RIHR) in this patient population. This study aims to demonstrate that RIHR is safe and effective in repairing inguinal hernias in patients who had previously undergone prostatectomy.

Background: Historically, faculty in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs have noted poor student writing proficiency, which is associated with substandard oral and written communication skills, analytical reflection, and professional role attainment. Few studies have investigated incorporating integrative collaborative model Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) strategies in DNP programs. This study evaluated the efficacy of this model on the writing proficiency of students in their final year of the DNP program.
