Pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rare and heterogeneous disease that remains the major cause of mortality in children with leukemia. To improve the outcome of pediatric AML we need to gain knowledge on the biological bases of this disease. NUP98-KDM5A (NK5A) fusion protein is present in a particular subgroup of young pediatric patients with poor outcome.

Background: The measurement of blood glucose in critically ill patients is still performed in many ICUs with glucose meters and capillary samples. Several prevalent factors in these patients affect the accuracy of the results and should be interpreted with caution. A weak recommendation from the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) suggests the use of arterial blood rather than capillary blood for point of care testing using glucose meters.

Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a leading cause of death all over the world. Diagnostic and therapeutic arsenals have improved in recent years, but we are unsure as to whether these advances have been transferred to clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in SCLC diagnostic processes and short-term survival rates between two recent cohorts.

Introduction: Few studies have been conducted to establish the relationship between colorectal cancer screening programmes and survival adjusting by stage and, to determine whether there are differences, at a biological level, between the tumours of asymptomatic and symptomatic patients. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to evaluate clinical, biological and survival differences between symptomatic colorectal tumours and those detected by screening.

Study Method: A prospective cohort study was performed of patients subjected to surgical intervention during the period 2010-2012, at different hospitals in Spain.

We investigate the clinical and pathological features related to variations in colorectal tumour apoptosis, proliferation and angiogenesis and the influence of the latter in short-term mortality (2 years); 551 tumour samples from a prospective cohort of patients with colorectal cancer were examined and tumour biology markers were determined as follows: percentage of apoptotic cells, by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) dUTP Nick-End Labeling technique; Ki-67 antigen, as a cell proliferation marker and density of microvessels (as a marker of angiogenesis). An increase in the percentage of cellular apoptosis is significantly related to the presence of poorly differentiated tumours, with vascular invasion (p < 0.001).

Background: Changes in lung cancer has been characterized by the increase of cases among women and the increase in adenocarcinomas among other histological subtypes.

Methods: Descriptive analysis of cases diagnosed with lung cancer in Hospital Virgen de las Nieves (Spain) from 1990 to 2010, based on five variables (age, sex, smoking, histology and pathological anatomy). The study establishes associations between these variables and compares the results with the literature.

Background And Objective: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis is the most common cause of refractory epilepsy, and the most common indication for surgery. Although effective, surgery fails in up to 40% of patients. The objective of our study was to establish a correlation between the different histological subtypes of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis and the prognosis, seizures control, side effects and anticonvulsivant drug withdrawal in patients with refractory epilepsy.

Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) is an intracellular effector of cell-matrix interactions and regulates many cellular processes, including growth, proliferation, survival, differentiation, migration, invasion and angiogenesis. The present work analyzes the role of ILK in wound healing in adult animals using a conditional knock-out of the ILK gene generated with the tamoxifen-inducible Cre-lox system (CRE-LOX mice). Results show that ILK deficiency leads to retarded wound closure in skin.

We report an unusual case of hemangiopericytoma-like dermatofibroma in the right shoulder of an 82-year-old patient with a well-defined nodular growth located in the dermis. Microscopic study revealed a band of haphazardly arranged cells with a vascular component of gaping, simple, endothelial-lined vascular structures with intervening postcapillary venules and capillary-sized slit-like "staghorn" vascular channels filled with erythrocytes; abundant mast cells were also observed. The neoplasm cells were positive for CD68 and Factor XIIIA and negative for CD34.

Introduction: Smoothelin is a cytoskeletal protein of differentiated smooth muscle cells with contractile capacity, distinguishing it from other smooth muscle proteins, such as smooth muscle actin (SMA).

Objective: To evaluate the expression of smoothelin and SMA in the skin in order to establish specific localizations of smoothelin in smooth muscle cells with high contractile capacity and in the epithelial component of cutaneous adnexal structures.

Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis (smoothelin and SMA) was performed in 18 patients with normal skin.

Grafts with subclinical rejection associated with interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (SCR+IF/TA) show poorer survival than grafts with subclinical rejection without IF/TA (SCR). Aiming to detect differences among SCR+IF/TA and SCR, we immunophenotyped the inflammatory infiltrate (CD45, CD3, CD20, CD68) and used a low-density array to determine levels of T(H)1 (interleukin IL-2, IL-3, gamma-interferon, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, lymphotoxin-alpha, lymphotoxin-beta, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) and T(H)2 (IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-13) transcripts as well as of IL-2R (as marker for T-cell activation) in 31 protocol biopsies of renal allografts. Here we show that grafts with early IF/TA and SCR can be distinguished from grafts with SCR on the basis of the activation of IL-10 gene expression and of an increased infiltration by B-lymphocytes in a cellular context in which the degree of T-cell activation is similar in both groups of biopsies, as demonstrated by equivalent levels of IL-2R mRNA.

The prevalence of subclinical rejection is lower in patients receiving tacrolimus than in patients treated with cyclosporine. However, it is not known whether this difference is related to the modulation of a specific cell immunophenotype. We perform a two case-one control study in patients treated with tacrolimus (n=44) or cyclosporine (n=22) with a protocol biopsy performed at 4 to 6 months.

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1, an enzyme that catalyzes the attachment of ADP ribose to target proteins, acts as a component of enhancer/promoter regulatory complexes. In the present study, we show that pharmacologic inhibition of PARP-1 with 3,4-dihydro-5-[4-(1-piperidinyl)butoxyl]-1(2H)-isoquinolinone (DPQ) results in a strong delay in tumor formation and in a dramatic reduction in tumor size and multiplicity during 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene plus 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced skin carcinogenesis. This observation was parallel with a reduction in the skin inflammatory infiltrate in DPQ-treated mice and tumor vasculogenesis.

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1)-deficient mice are protected against septic shock, type I diabetes, stroke and inflammation. It is now accepted that inflammation and related events, such as activation of NF-kappaB, are key components in the initiation and progression of epithelial cancer and in particular in the neoplastic transformation of keratinocytes and skin carcinogenesis. Here, we report that PARP-1-deficient mice display a strikingly reduced susceptibility to skin carcinogenesis.

Background: Although studies have shown that mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) with cyclosporine (CsA) and prednisone can reduce the incidence of acute rejection and increase the half-life of the graft, the effects of MMF on established chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) are controversial.

Methods: We studied 121 patients with biopsy-proven CAN, 59 treated with CsA and prednisone and 62 treated with triple-drug therapy with azathioprine. At inclusion, each group received 2 g per day of MMF and azathioprine was stopped.
