The evolution of local ferroelectric lattice distortions in multiferroic Ge Mn Te is studied by x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory. We show that the anion/cation displacements smoothly decrease with increasing Mn content, thereby reducing the ferroelectric transition from 700 to 100 K at = 0.5, where the ferromagnetic Curie temperature reaches its maximum.

Hole spins have gained considerable interest in the past few years due to their potential for fast electrically controlled qubits. Here, we study holes confined in Ge hut wires, a so-far unexplored type of nanostructure. Low-temperature magnetotransport measurements reveal a large anisotropy between the in-plane and out-of-plane g-factors of up to 18.

For three types of colloidal magnetic nanocrystals, we demonstrate that postsynthetic cation exchange enables tuning of the nanocrystal's magnetic properties and achieving characteristics not obtainable by conventional synthetic routes. While the cation exchange procedure, performed in solution phase approach, was restricted so far to chalcogenide based semiconductor nanocrystals, here ferrite-based nanocrystals were subjected to a Fe(2+) to Co(2+) cation exchange procedure. This allows tracing of the compositional modifications by systematic and detailed magnetic characterization.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) nanopatterned electrodes are prepared from colloidal solutions as a material saving alternative to the industrial vapor phase deposition and top down processing. For that purpose highly monodisperse In(1-x)Sn(x) (x < 0.1) colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) are synthesized with accurate size and composition control.
