Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants widely used in electronic and domestic goods. These persistent pollutants are present in the environment and in humans, and their toxicological properties are of growing concern. PBDEs can be metabolised into compounds suspected to be responsible for their toxicity.

Parametric modelling of cardiac system multiple measurement signals: an open-source computer framework for performance evaluation of ECG, PCG and ABP event detectors.

The major focus of this study is to present a performance accuracy assessment framework based on mathematical modelling of cardiac system multiple measurement signals. Three mathematical algebraic subroutines with simple structural functions for synthetic generation of the synchronously triggered electrocardiogram (ECG), phonocardiogram (PCG) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) signals are described. In the case of ECG signals, normal and abnormal PQRST cycles in complicated conditions such as fascicular ventricular tachycardia, rate dependent conduction block and acute Q-wave infarctions of inferior and anterolateral walls can be simulated.

Prenatal diagnosis of Jeune-like syndromes with two-dimensional and three-dimensional sonography.

The purpose of this article is to describe the use of three-dimensional sonography as an adjuvant to two-dimensional sonography facilitating an earlier and more definitive diagnosis of Jeune and Jeune-like syndromes in the second trimester. We report two cases in which three-dimensional sonography facilitated the diagnosis of these malformations. A diagnosis of Jeune syndrome was made in our first case.

Transversus abdominis plane infiltration and quality of recovery after laparoscopic hysterectomy: a randomized controlled trial.

Molecular investigation of the effects of lindane in rat hepatocytes: microarray and mechanistic studies.

Although many studies of lindane toxicity have been carried out, we still know little about the underlying molecular mechanisms. We used a microarray specifically designed for studies of the hepatotoxic effects of xenobiotics to evaluate the effects of lindane on specific gene expression in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. These genes were assigned to detoxication processes (CYP3A4, Gsta2, CYP4A1), cell signalling pathways and apoptosis (Eif2b3, Eif2b4, PKC).

Diels-Alder cycloaddition of o-quinonedimethides and alkylidene-5H-furan-2-ones: new and rapid access to lambertellol cores and arthrinone derivatives.

An efficient synthesis of deoxy-lambertellols was reported through a highly chemo- and diastereoselective intermolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition between trans-1,2-disiloxybenzocyclobutenes and 2-methylprotoanemonine. Such transformation with δ-substituted γ-alkylidenebutenolides, to prepare new analogues of these tricyclic spirolactones, which would be very difficult to prepare by other ways, was also studied.

Anti-apoptotic pro-survival effect of clotrimazole in a normothermic ischemia reperfusion injury animal model.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that apoptosis plays a critical role in ischemia reperfusion (IR)-mediated liver injury. Clotrimazole (CTZ) is a potent antimycotic drug that also has a free radical scavenger activity. This study investigated the possible anti-apoptotic, pro-survival role of CTZ in hepatic IR injury in rats.

There are many medical image processing software tools available for research and diagnosis purposes. However, most of these tools are available only as local applications. This limits the accessibility of the software to a specific machine, and thus the data and processing power of that application are not available to other workstations.

Clotrimazole protects the liver against normothermic ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

Objective: To investigate the possible antiapoptotic prosurvival role of the pregnane X receptor (PXR) in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats using clotrimazole (CTZ), a strong PXR transactivator.

Materials And Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups of 6 each: sham-treated, control, and CTZ-treated animals. Control and CTZ-treated animals were subjected to 30 minutes of normothermic ischemia of the whole liver followed by 6 hours of reperfusion.

Pregnane X receptor activation protects rat hepatocytes against deoxycholic acid-induced apoptosis.

Background/aims: Bile acids damage the liver, essentially by inducing hepatocyte apoptosis. Clinical studies have shown that several activators of the pregnane X receptor (PXR) may induce the remission of cholestasis. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in this beneficial effect remain unclear.

Cryopreserved porcine hepatocytes: expression and induction of cytochrome P450, isoform CYP2E1.

Cryopreservation of porcine hepatocytes for their use in bioartificial liver devices may result in reduced cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme activity. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of several CYP inducers on the isoform CYP2E1 protein expression in cryopreserved porcine hepatocytes. Isolated porcine hepatocytes were cryopreserved for 1 month, thawed, and cultured for 3 days.

Lindane and cell death: at the crossroads between apoptosis, necrosis and autophagy.

Lindane, a persistent organochlorine pesticide, is recognized as a major public health concern because of its potential toxic effects on human health. Despite observations pointing to the toxicity of lindane, mechanisms underlying its deleterious effects in liver have yet to be understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of lindane on autophagic, apoptotic and necrotic cell death in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.

Localized content-based image retrieval.

We define localized content-based image retrieval as a CBIR task where the user is only interested in a portion of the image, and the rest of the image is irrelevant. In this paper we present a localized CBIR system, Accio, that uses labeled images in conjunction with a multiple-instance learning algorithm to first identify the desired object and weight the features accordingly, and then to rank images in the database using a similarity measure that is based upon only the relevant portions of the image. A challenge for localized CBIR is how to represent the image to capture the content.

Peritoneal implantation of cryopreserved encapsulated porcine hepatocytes in rats without immunosuppression: viability and function.

The bioartificial liver (BAL) represents a promising approach to cell transplantation without immunosuppression as a method to support patients with hepatic insufficiency. The aim of this study was to assess viability and function of cryopreserved encapsulated porcine hepatocytes implanted intraperitoneally in rats without immunosuppression. Isolated porcine hepatocytes were cryopreserved at -196 degrees C for 1 month.

A wandering spleen: unusual cause of a pelvic mass.

Background: Wandering spleen is a rare entity characterized by the incomplete fixation of the gastrosplenic ligaments. Several imaging modalities have been used to diagnose this condition, including Doppler ultrasonography, computed tomography, nuclear scintigraphy, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Endosulfan is an organochlorine insecticide described as a potential carcinogen in humans. This insecticide was recently reported to alter the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling pathways and is suspected to affect cell growth and differentiation in human keratinocytes. This study was designed to assess the mitogenic, apoptogenic, and genotoxic effects of endosulfan on the HaCaT cell line.

Stand structure and spatial patterns of trees in mixed Hyrcanian Beech forest, Iran.

The mixed beach forests (Fagus orientalis) commonly dominate by shade tolerance species with irregular uneven age stand structure. The aim of this study was to analyze the stand structure and spatial pattern in order to identify specific structural patterns. Data was collected from a 16 ha permanent plot.

First trimester screening aids in the diagnosis and management of an ectopic pregnancy in a noncommunicating uterine horn.

Pregnancy within a noncommunicating rudimentary horn has a 70% chance of rupturing, with a maternal mortality of 0.5%. It is most commonly managed with operative removal of the horn.
