Background: The peri-operative period may create a biological environment conducive to cancer cell survival and dissemination. Microscopic residual tumours (micrometastases) can be dislodged even with excellent surgical technique. At the same time, the stress response from surgery can temporarily impair immune function and activate inflammatory processes, increasing the risk of tumour proliferation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA wind turbine system (WTS) is a highly coupled and nonlinear system where the output power depends upon highly uncertain wind speed. Therefore, the quality of produced power becomes a challenging problem for researchers. Direct Vector Control (DVC) is a powerful and widely utilized power control strategy to deal with winds that vary rapidly and randomly.

Introduction: Societal guidelines offer a weak recommendation to perform cystoscopy for female patients with recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI) of advanced age and/or with high-risk features. These guidelines lack the support of robust data and are instead based on expert opinion. In this retrospective cohort study, we aim to determine the utility of cystoscopy in patients with and without high-risk features for rUTI.

Excisional surgery is essential in approximately 70% of solid organ tumours. Emerging research in onco-anaesthesiology suggests that perioperative anaesthetic and analgesic techniques might influence long-term oncologic outcomes.

However, studies typically focus on investigating the effects of the strength of this identity. Based on insights from identity research, we theorize that the influence of individuals' environmental identity on their proenvironmental behavior may depend on other identity dimensions as well.

There is also evidence for an association between vitamin D levels and menstrual problems such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhea. Curcumin, is a bioactive polyphenol constituent of turmeric, that can potentially interact with vitamin D receptors and its molecular targets.

Indeed, 45% of patients undergoing intubation experience at least one major peri-intubation adverse event, with cardiovascular instability being the most common event reported in 43%, followed by severe hypoxemia in 9% and cardiac arrest in 3% of cases. These peri-intubation adverse events may expose patients to a higher risk of 28-day mortality, and they are more frequently observed with an increasing number of attempts to secure the airway.

Some investigations in nonuremic individuals have indicated that isoflavones can reduce serum glucose, blood pressure, and increase insulin sensitivity. However, such study in this field in PD patients is still lacking.

Tomatoes contain micronutrients and various bioactive components with antioxidant properties. Many of the health benefits of tomatoes have been attributed to lycopene encouraging athletes to consume pure lycopene supplements.

We propose that the concept of connectedness with nature and associated individual difference measures offer a relevant and useful lens to inform us about how humans think, feel and behave in such critical times. Our two-wave study, conducted with 486 United States residents at the end of March 2020 (wave 1) and 533 United States residents at the beginning of May 2020 (wave 2), focuses on the 2020 coronavirus situation.

Biological application of carbon nanotube in drug delivery is our main concern in this investigation. For this purpose interaction of carnosine and carbon nanotube was studied in both gas phase and separately in aqueous media. Three possible interactions of carnosine dipeptide with (5,5) carbon nanotube in physiological media were considered.

Background: In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease is lipid abnormalities. This study was designed to investigate the effects of ginger supplementation on serum lipids and lipoproteins in PD patients. ♦
Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 36 PD patients were randomly assigned to either the ginger or the placebo group.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ginger supplementation on serum glucose, advanced glycation end products, oxidative stress, and systemic and vascular inflammatory markers in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD).
Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 36 patients on PD were randomly assigned to either the ginger or the placebo group. The patients in the ginger group received 1000 mg/d ginger for 10 wk, whereas the placebo group received corresponding placebos.
This paper presents a real time implementation of the single-phase power factor correction (PFC) AC-DC boost converter. A combination of higher order sliding mode controller based on super twisting algorithm and predictive control techniques are implemented to improve the performance of the boost converter. Due to the chattering effects, the higher order sliding mode control (HOSMC) is designed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis paper proposes analysis and control of a single-phase power factor corrector (PFC). The proposed control is capable of achieving a unity power factor for each DC link voltage or load fluctuation. The method under study is composed of two intelligent approaches, a fuzzy logic controller to ensure an output voltage at a suitable value and predictive current control.

However, dialysis adequacy is one of the subjects of concern of this modality. There are some drugs that are capable of influencing solute transport in the peritoneum, such as acetyle co-enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I) medications and calcium channel blockers.

This controller is oriented to drive an AC-DC converter operating in continuous mode with power factor near unity, and in order to improve static and dynamic performances with large variations of reference voltage and load. This study shows the great influence of the controller gains on the global performances of the system.

Design: Prospective, randomized, comparative study.
Methods: Patients with refractory glaucoma, defined as uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) of more than 21 mm Hg despite maximal antiglaucoma medication, previously failed nonseton surgical treatment, or a combination thereof were included.
Background: Lipid abnormalities, particularly high serum concentration of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], are one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of soy consumption on serum lipids and apoproteins, especially Lp(a), in PD patients. ♢
Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial in which 40 PD patients (20 males, 20 females) were randomly assigned to either the soy or the control group.
Purpose: To compare 1-site and 2-site phacotrabeculectomies with regard to visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) control, antiglaucoma medication requirements, and postoperative complications.
Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, 169 eyes with coexisting visually significant cataract and glaucoma were randomly allocated into 2 groups: eyes that had a trabeculectomy in a superior quadrant combined with phacoemulsification through the same incision (1-site group; n=85) or those with a separate, temporal, clear corneal incision for phacoemulsification (2-site group; n=84). Postoperative evaluation, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma medication requirements, and surgical complications, was for up to 18 months.
Objective: We studied the effects of soy consumption on oxidative stress, blood homocysteine, coagulation factors, and phosphorus in peritoneal dialysis patients.
Design: This was an unblinded, randomized clinical trial.
Setting: This study involved peritoneal dialysis centers in Tehran, Iran.
Purpose: To compare the corneal endothelial cell (CEC) changes that occurred after phacotrabeculectomy performed at 1 or 2 sites.
Design: A historical cohort study.
Methods: The records of patients who had 1-site (n = 61) or 2-site (n = 52) limbus-based phacotrabeculectomy over a 4-year period (2002-2005) at 1 eye surgery center (Vanak Eye Surgery Center, Tehran, Iran) by a single surgeon were reviewed, and postoperative CEC indices were measured.
