Every year, the Student Debates Subcommittee (SDS) of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) for the annual Entomological Society of America (ESA) meeting organizes the Student Debates. This year, the SAC selected topics based on their synergistic effect or ability to ignite exponential positive change when addressed as a whole. For the 2019 Student Debates, the SAC SDS identified these topic areas for teams to debate and unbiased introduction speakers to address: 1) how to better communicate science to engage the public, particularly in the area of integrated pest management (IPM), 2) the influential impacts of climate change on agriculturally and medically relevant insect pests, and 3) sustainable agriculture techniques that promote the use of IPM to promote food security.

Dopaminergic activity in prefrontal cortex is modulated by the low (Met) and high (Val) activity of the rs4680 Val158Met single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene. While this has been related to working memory maintenance in patients with schizophrenia, the familial pattern, impact across the psychosis spectrum, and the role of this genotype on other aspects of behavior, such as cognitive flexibility, remains unclear. The relationship between COMT Val158Met genotype and both cognitive stability and flexibility were assessed using the Penn Conditional Exclusion Test (PCET) in healthy controls (n = 241), patients with psychotic disorders (n = 542), and their first-degree relatives (n = 613) from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) consortium.

Background: Several cases of autism spectrum disorder have been linked to mutations in the SHANK3 gene. Haploinsufficiency of the SHANK3 gene contributes to Phelan-McDermid syndrome, which often presents an autism spectrum disorder phenotype along with moderate to severe intellectual disability. Recent preclinical studies have shown that activation of the serotonin 5-HT receptor has the potential to treat neurodevelopmental disorders such as Fragile X syndrome, a rare disease characterized by autistic features. With the aim to provide the scientific community with diversified drug-like 5-HT receptor-preferring agonists, we designed a set of new long-chain arylpiperazines by exploiting structural fragments present in clinically approved drugs or in preclinical candidates (privileged scaffolds). The new compounds were synthesized, tested for their affinity at 5-HT and 5-HT receptors, and screened for their in vitro stability to microsomal degradation and toxicity.

The 2018 student debates of the Entomological Society of America were held at the Joint Annual Meeting for the Entomological Societies of America, Canada, and British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. Three unbiased introductory speakers and six debate teams discussed and debated topics under the theme 'Entomology in the 21st Century: Tackling Insect Invasions, Promoting Advancements in Technology, and Using Effective Science Communication'. This year's debate topics included: 1) What is the most harmful invasive insect species in the world? 2) How can scientists diffuse the stigma or scare factor surrounding issues that become controversial such as genetically modified organisms, agricultural biotechnological developments, or pesticide chemicals? 3) What new/emerging technologies have the potential to revolutionize entomology (other than Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats)? Introductory speakers and debate teams spent approximately 9 mo preparing their statements and arguments and had the opportunity to share this at the Joint Annual Meeting with an engaged audience.

Background: The results from cross sectional and longitudinal studies show that periodontitis is closely associated with cognitive impairment (CI) and Alzhemer's Disease (AD). Further, studies using animal model of periodontitis and human post-mortem brain tissues from subjects with AD strongly suggest that a gram-negative periodontal pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and/or its product gingipain is/are translocated to the brain. Alterations in frontostriatal circuitry that supports flexible behavior might underlie this behavioral impairment. Central infusion of the Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor, ouabain in rats serves as an animal model of mania because it leads to hyperactivity, as well as reproduces ion dysregulation and reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels similar to that observed in bipolar disorder.
