We demonstrate for the first time that simple face-centered cubic (fcc) silicon nano-crystals can be produced by a solution based bottom-up synthesis route under ambient conditions. Simple fcc Si nano-crystals (2-7 nm) were prepared at room temperature by using sodium cyclopentadienide as a reducing agent for silicon tetrachloride. Photoluminescence emission at 550 nm was observed for the fcc silicon nano-crystals upon excitation at 340 nm, indicating that fcc Si nano-crystals were exhibiting direct bandgap like semiconductor properties with very fast radiative recombination rates.

A molten salt synthesis route, previously reported to yield BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and Na2Ti6O13 nanorods, has been re-examined to elucidate the role of volatile chlorides. A precursor mixture containing barium (or lead) and titanium was annealed in the presence of NaCl at 760 or 820 degrees C. The main products were respectively isometric nanocrystalline BaTiO3 and PbTiO3.

Novel hierarchical self-assembled structures; bur-like PbTiO3 nanostructures were made by self-assembly of PbTiO3 nanocrystals under hydrothermal conditions using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate surfactant. The bur-like nanostructures exhibit a unique geometrical shape with cores of agglomerated nanocrystals and outershells of nanorods. The nanorods were between 30 nm and 100 nm in diameter and from several hundred nm up to 2 microm in length.
