Background: Effective evidence-based interventions (EBI) are necessary to prevent and avoid negative life trajectories for children with mental health problems. Even though many EBIs prove effective when tested, few are successfully implemented and used in real-world clinical practice. As a result, many children and families do not receive the best care in due time or at all.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic and environmental influences on social factors (like relationship satisfaction and loneliness) and their connections to mental health and life satisfaction over time.
  • Using data from a large sample of adult twins, researchers examined how shared genetics might confound the relationship between social factors and wellbeing.
  • Results show that social factors have significant genetic components, and while some associations with wellbeing reduced when controlling for genetics, they still remained significant over a six-year period.

Physical and sexual violence against pregnant women have been associated with detrimental mental health outcomes for victims. Few studies have examined both positive (wellbeing) and negative (illbeing) mental health indicators in the same sample. Additionally, the literature assessing mental health based on different forms of violence is limited.

Mental health problems in adolescence are increasing and there is an urgent call for transdiagnostic interventions, as most adolescents experience problems across multiple domains. Research has identified a general psychopathology factor (p) capturing the shared variance across mental health problems. In parallel, there is empirical support for the transdiagnostic nature of emotion regulation.

Background: Becoming a caregiver can be a transformative journey with profound, multifaceted implications for well-being. However, existing research predominantly emphasizes the negative aspects of caregiving, paying less attention to the positive sides. This study aims to explore the impact of transitioning into a caregiving role on various well-being indicators, such as negative hedonic, positive hedonic, eudaimonic, and social well-being.

Background: Stressful life events (SLEs) constitute key risk factors for depression. However, previous studies examining associations between SLEs and depression have been limited by focusing on single events, combining events into broad categories, and/or ignoring interrelationships between events in statistical analyses. Network analysis comprises a set of statistical methods well-suited for assessing relationships between multiple variables and can help surpass several limitations of previous studies.

Article Synopsis
  • During COVID-19, informal caregivers faced increased responsibilities while support systems became less accessible, impacting their psychosocial well-being.
  • A study analyzed changes in psychological well-being and loneliness among caregivers and non-caregivers through multiple stages of the pandemic, using data from nearly 15,000 participants in Norway.
  • Results indicated that caregivers had consistently lower well-being compared to non-caregivers, with significant increases in anxiety and worry during peak pandemic periods, particularly affecting those providing more intensive care or facing health challenges.

Despite growing concerns about substantial socio-economic differences between districts in many developed nations, limited attention has been paid to how adolescent mental health may be shaped by district characteristics. A few studies have shown that adolescent mental health is related to contextual factors such as district socio-economic status, neighborhood disorder, and quality of infrastructure. However, prior estimates may be an artifact of unmeasured differences between districts.

Few studies have assessed the multifactorial nature of environmental influences on population mental health. In this large-scale, population-based study of adults, we applied network analysis to study the relationship between environmental factors and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and well-being. We estimated networks with overall mental health nodes and individual symptoms to assess both broad and fine-grained associations between environmental factors and mental health.

What are the major sources of worldwide variability in subjective well-being (SWB)? Twin and family studies of SWB have found substantial heritability and strong effects from unique environments but virtually no effects from shared environments. However, extant findings are not necessarily valid at the global level. Prior studies have examined within-countries variability but did not take into account mean differences across nations.

Article Synopsis
  • Informal caregiving can negatively affect both physical and mental health, but the extent of these effects varies widely among different individuals.
  • The study examined whether the impacts of caregiving differ for those with migrant backgrounds, analyzing data from over 133,000 respondents in Norway and finding that non-Western caregivers, especially women, reported worse mental health outcomes.
  • Ultimately, while the findings suggest that migrant caregivers may not face "double jeopardy," there are concerns about the lack of representation of the most vulnerable individuals in this group, highlighting the need for better inclusion in future health surveys to inform support strategies.

Purpose: The structure of well-being has been debated for millennia. Dominant conceptualisations, such as the hedonic and eudaimonic models, emphasise different constituents of the well-being construct. Some previous studies have suggested that the underlying structure of well-being may consist of one or a few general well-being factors.

Objectives: We investigated the relationship between childhood weight status and academic achievement across sexes and different school subjects in Norway.

Study Design And Setting: We used data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), which includes genetic data (N = 13,648, 8-year-old children). We employed within-family mendelian randomization, using a body mass index (BMI) polygenic risk score as an instrument to address unobserved heterogeneity.

Background: Despite accumulated evidence that language development depends on basic cognitive processes, the balance in contributions of verbal and non-verbal cognitive skills to language abilities is still underexplored. Little is known about which cognitive measures best predict the degree of severity in children with language disorder (LD).

Aims: To examine the association between verbal and non-verbal cognitive abilities with language abilities in typically developing and language impaired 8-year-old children, as well as which cognitive abilities are most effective in distinguishing LD severity levels.

Purpose: We examined multidimensional, heterogeneous reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated measures to provide further insights into the developmental processes of risk and adaptation.

Method: We used three-wave questionnaire data from 8156 individuals participating in the Norwegian County Public Health Survey assessed 1-5 months before and three (June 2020) and nine (December 2020) months after the outbreak. Latent profile and latent transition analyses were used to identify latent quality of life (QoL) classes and multiform changes, their probabilities, and predictors.

As the pandemic continues, many older adults are facing prolonged isolation and stress while having less access to traditional ways of coping. There is widespread concern that the situation is increasingly taking its toll on older adults' psychological and social well-being. We use linear mixed models to examine psychosocial impacts and predictors thereof among older Norwegians in early and later stages of the pandemic.

In light of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its large economic consequences, we used a three-layer nested structural model (individual, community, and country), each with a corresponding measure of income, trust, and satisfaction, to assess change in their interrelationships following a global crisis; which, in this study, is the 2008/2009 financial crisis. With multilevel techniques, we analyzed data from two waves (2006 and 2012) of the European Social Survey (ESS) in 19 countries (weighted = 73,636) grouped according to their levels of trust. In high trust countries, personal life satisfaction (LS) was not related to personal, community, or national income before or after the crisis.

Psychological resilience is indicated when individuals demonstrate good mental health despite exposure to significant stress or adversity. Good mental health may involve low levels of illbeing and/or high levels of wellbeing. There is still very limited knowledge about the potential differences between these outcomes in relation to stressors.
