View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: The purpose of the current prospective multicenter study was to evaluate the 5-year implant success and peri-implant conditions of smooth-surface Brånemark System implants when using a novel technique including a 1-stage surgical procedure with early loading in edentulous mandibles.
Materials And Methods: The study protocol included 1-stage surgery as well as placement of the definitive prosthesis within 6 weeks after implant insertion (ie, early loading). Clinical evaluation, as well as evaluation of function and esthetics, was performed at each follow-up visit.
Primary stability for an implant that is placed in a prostheticaly and aesthetically desirable position is of essential importance for a successful result. A limiting factor for achieving sufficient stability for an implant is insufficient volume of bone at the implant site. With the help of distraction osteogenesis, sufficient volume of bone can be generated at the desired implant site.

Purpose: To assess the treatment outcome (implant survival, surgical complications, patient satisfaction) of vertical distraction of the severely resorbed edentulous mandible.
Materials And Methods: Forty-six patients with severe resorption of the edentulous mandible (bone height 5 to 8 mm, median 6 mm) participated in this study. The anterior segment of the mandible was vertically augmented using the Groningen distraction device.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine whether a new degradable synthetic barrier membrane (Vivosorb) composed of poly(dl-lactide-epsilon-caprolactone) (PDLLCL) can be useful in implant dentistry and to compare it with collagen and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes.
Material And Methods: In 192 male Sprague-Dawley rats, a standardized 5 mm circular defect was created through the right angle of the mandible. New bone formation was evaluated by post-mortem microradiography and micro-CT (muCT) imaging.

Purpose: To assess the need for surgical and prosthetic aftercare of craniofacial prostheses supported by endosseous implants.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective clinical study assessing the surgical and prosthetic aftercare from implant placement to last visit of follow-up was performed in consecutively treated patients with implant-retained craniofacial prostheses in a department of oral and maxillofacial surgery between 1988 and 2003.
Results: Ninety-five patients were rehabilitated with implant-retained craniofacial prostheses.

Purpose: The aim of the present investigation was to review and evaluate the current literature on skeletal bone anchorage in orthodontics with regard to success rates of the various systems.
Materials And Methods: MEDLINE, PubMed, and Cochrane searches (period January 1966 to January 2006, English language) of animal and human studies using skeletal anchorage during orthodontic treatment were scrutinized. A total of 50 relevant articles were identified which investigated various types of implants.
Purpose: To investigate the influence of (1) osteoporosis on resorption of edentulous and (2) whether osteoporosis enhances implant loss.
Materials And Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases were searched for association of osteoporosis and bone resorption/loss of implants. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined and quality assessment of the remaining studies after exclusion was performed.
Objective: Intraobserver reliability and agreement were determined for microradiography (MR), micro-computed tomography (microCT) and histomorphometry (HM). These three modalities were compared for quantitative measurements of bone formation and graft modelling in rat mandibular defects and grafts.
Design: Twelve rats were randomly selected from a larger experiment, evaluating bone formation in rat mandibular defects and bone modelling in grafts.

This study assessed the quality of life related to oral function in edentulous head and neck cancer patients following oncology treatment of malignancies in the lower region of the oral cavity.
Materials And Methods: Patients treated between 1990 and 2000 with surgery and radiotherapy for a squamous cell carcinoma in the oral cavity who were edentulous in the mandible and had been treated with a conventional, non-implant-retained denture received an invitation for a clinical check-up (clinical assessment, questionnaires regarding oral function and quality of life).
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the aesthetics of implant-supported single-tooth replacements using different augmentation procedures in a prospective study with the use of an objective rating index and with a subjective patient questionnaire, and to compare the results with each other.
Material And Methods: Ninety-three patients with a single-tooth gap in the anterior zone of the maxilla were selected for the study. All patients had a local bone defect that needed augmentation before placement of an endosseous implant with sufficient initial stability.

Purpose: To assess the objective and subjective morbidity of mandibular bone harvesting.
Materials And Methods: Forty-five patients who had been subjected to mandibular bone harvesting from the chin region (group 1, n = 15), the retromolar region (group 2, n = 15), or the retromolar region after removal of the third molar (group 3, n = 15) participated in this study. Complications, postoperative morbidity, and patient acceptance of the procedure were evaluated by assessing the medical records and performing standardized routine clinical and radiographic examinations up to 12 months after the augmentation procedure.

Materials And Methods: One hundred fifty-one edentulous patients (5 groups) with a symphyseal mandibular bone height between 8 and 25 mm participated. Sixty-two patients were treated with an overdenture retained by 2 implants (groups 1 and 3), 59 patients were treated with a conventional denture (groups 2 and 5), and 30 patients were treated with a conventional denture after preprosthetic vestibuloplasty (group 4).
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using a two-piece implant system in a non-submerged procedure and to study the impact of the microgap between the implant and abutment.
Methods: Sixty edentulous patients (Cawood Class V-VI) participated in this study. After randomization, 20 patients received two two-piece implants placed in a non-submerged procedure, 20 patients received two two-piece implants placed in the traditional submerged procedure, and 20 patients were treated with two one-piece dental implants placed in the traditional non-submerged procedure.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of resorbable screws made of poly (D.L-lactide) acid (PDLLA) for fixation of autologous bone grafts related to graft regeneration and osseointegration of dental implants. In eight edentulous patients suffering from insufficient retention of their upper denture related to a severely resorbed maxilla, the floor of both maxillary sinus and width of the alveolar crest were augmented with an autologous bone graft from the iliac crest.

The purpose of this retrospective study of HS and HC implants was to evaluate clinical and radiographic parameters of peri-implant tissue and to analyze surgical and prosthetic aftercare.
Methods: A total of 89 HS and 26 HC implants in 38 edentulous patients were available for complete evaluation.
Objectives: The important item of aesthetics is rarely included in evaluation studies. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an index for rating aesthetics of implant-supported single crowns and adjacent soft tissues.
Material And Methods: Nine items were selected, which have an influence on the aesthetic result.
