Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the impact of the live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the digestibility of various forages used in dairy diets in South America using four non-lactating cows in a controlled experiment.
  • - Results showed that supplementation increased dry matter and neutral detergent fiber degradation by 4.6% and 10.3% respectively, with changes in yeast counts and lactate concentrations in the rumen fluid.
  • - The findings indicate that SC supplementation enhances forage degradability without being influenced by the type of forage consumed.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a growing need for alternatives to synthetic fungicides for controlling toxigenic fungi in grains, leading researchers to explore the antifungal properties of essential oils (EOs).
  • The essential oils were chemically analyzed, assessed for antioxidant potential, and tested for their antifungal and antimycotoxigenic activities against a specific toxic fungus.
  • Results showed that the EOs caused structural damage to the fungus, reduced its growth, and significantly decreased the production of harmful compounds, indicating their potential effectiveness in controlling these types of fungi.

The rumen primary and secondary metabolite content is intimately related to its community of bacteria, protozoa, fungi, archaea and bacteriophages, ingested feed and the host. Despite the myriad of interactions and novel compounds to be discovered, few studies have explored the rumen metabolome. Here, we present the first study using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry and Molecular Networking approach, and various extraction methods on the cell-free rumen fluid of a non-lactating Holstein cow.

Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) is widely studied because of its foliar steviol glycosides. Fructan-type polysaccharides were recently isolated from its roots. Fructans are reserve carbohydrates that have important positive health effects and technological applications in the food industry.
